Hi all, it was brought to my attention, that some subscribers of these lists might not be familiar with the Saros team. My apologies for any confusion that I might have caused. To clarify: In my previous mail, I was speaking on the behalf of the Saros team in general. The mentioned Franz is Franz Zieris (Fra...@fu...), the head of the Saros team. Best regards, Tobias Bouschen |

Hi all, after a discussion with Franz, we decided to leave the old SourceForge mailing list behind, as its technical administration grew more and more cumbersome over the years. We are moving this list to Google Groups. The new group is named "saros-announce" and is reachable through "https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/saros-announce". There are two options for subscribing to the new mailing list: 1.) With a googlemail account: If you are logged in with a googlemail account, you can use "http://groups.google.com/group/saros-announce/boxsubscribe" or go to "https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/saros-announce" and use the blue "Join group" button next to the group name. Through "My settings -> Membership and email settings", you can manage your username, email address used for the subscription and the email delivery preference (daily summaries, combined updates or updates for each message). 2.) Without a googlemail account: You can subscribe to the list via the web interface by going to "http://groups.google.com/group/saros-announce/boxsubscribe" and entering the email address you want to join with or via email by sending an email to "sar...@go..." (the subject or content of the mail does not matter). Either of those should result in an automated mail to the given address which contains a link to complete the joining process. This method does *NOT* allow you to change your settings. This means you will not be able to set a username. Instead, everything before the '@' in your address will be used ("fo...@st..." will result in the username "foo.bar"). Furthermore, you will not be able to change your subscription options, meaning that it is not possible to enable daily summaries or combined updates for the list. Best regards, Tobias |

Dear Saros users, The Saros Team is happy to announce release 14.10.31. Since the previous release we mostly removed unnecessary code, refactored, removed again, refactored again: There were over 500 commits since the last release. As a result, the Saros binaries' file size shrunk from 9.9 MByte to 7.0 MByte. So don't expect many new features, but an improved user experience. With this release we also set a record we are not particularly proud of: Instead of intended one-week release process, it took us eleven months to push Saros 14.10.31 out of the pipeline. One reason for that: We're busy working on the IntelliJ IDEA version and a shiny new GUI for both Saros versions. Stay tuned! New and improved Features * Your account information is now stored in your home directory inside a ".saros" folder. It's therefore independent from one specific IDE instance. * Away messages of XMPP contacts will be displayed * Alternative minimalistic chat layout in "IRC style" (which is way more compact than the default layout) * Newly implemented, now session-independent file transfer * Choose the Socks5 proxy candidates * Starting a session with multiple projects at once is now faster since all files are put into one archive (instead of multiple per-project archives put into one big archive) Disabled Features * The optional feature "Concurrent Undo" was disabled due to Bug #836. This needs further investigation; as of now, activating this feature would do more harm than good. Removed Features * Need-based synchronization * Screensharing * VoIP Improved GUI * Sorting of contacts in session view: Now by display name (i.e. optional nickname), not by Jabber ID * Improved explanation on how to get started with Saros * Improved UPnP explanation in network preferences * Notification when receiving projects using unavailable charsets * States of the invitation process have better labels * Optional: better looking remote selections (cursor and blocks for multi-line selections) * Restructured the "Add XMPP Account" dialog * The 1-to-1 chat is no longer colored with session user colors Fixed network-related issues introduced with last release (13.12.6): * Local Socks5 Proxy was always enabled, i.e. the options to only allow connections over IBB and an external Socks5 Proxy Server (under Saros > Network) were not honored. * Changing accounts on-the-fly without clicking reconnect was not possible Additionally, you will find many minor fixes and usability improvements. (For details, see the changelog at https://sourceforge.net/projects/dpp/files/Saros/DPP%2014.10.31/#readme.) For stability reasons some internal changes have been made. As a consequence Saros 14.30.31 is *not* compatible with previous versions, so that all session participants need Saros 14.10.31 to work together. Install and update Saros 14.10.31 via our Eclipse Update Site: http://dpp.sf.net/update For more information visit http://www.saros-project.org. Many thanks to the users who participated in our survey (although it is currently offline) and to everyone who helped us improve our plug-in! Best Regards, Saros Team |

Dear Saros users,
The Saros Team got some more developers and so we are pleased to announce
the release 13.12.6. This release fixes bugs, and brings new features and
improvements.
* Now you can send and use hyperlinks via chat.
* Cleaner "Create Account form" and detailed invitation page. Now you see
the nickname of the inviter on the invitation page, and you get
detailed information about the file count and total file size also for
partially shared projects.
* You could now enable/disable all four sound events separately. These
sound events are "contact comes online/offline" and "chat message
sent/received". Prior to Saros 13.12.6 you could only enable/disable
the sound when receiving a chat message.
* We changed the logic of the follow mode toolbar button. Clicking on the
button will now switch the follow mode to the next session user.
Furthermore a dropdown menu has been added to select a specific user
who should be followed.
* Unfortunately we had to cut off one piece of functionality: only the
session host can add projects to sessions. This was a necessary
regression to gain more stability and ensure data integrity. We're
working on this and are confident to be able to re-enable this feature
soon.
Additionally, you will find many minor fixes and usability improvements.
Check out the changelog:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dpp/files/Saros/DPP%2013.12.6/#readme
For stability reasons some internal changes have been made.
As a consequence Saros 13.12.6 is *not* compatible with previous versions,

Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse
=================================================
Long time no see, but finally the Saros Team is proud to announce the
release of version 13.3.22.
Instead of just fixing bugs, this release provides you with a bunch of
new features:
* Saros now supports session-independent 1-to-1 chats enabling a
direct communication with your buddies.
* The multi user chat has been improved by providing more and better
notifications as well as fixes.
* We introduced a new color management, which tries to ensure that you
always get the same colors in your session, independent of who started
the session in the first
place.
To achieve this, we had to restrict the freedom of choosing any RGB
color to a strict five-color-mode,
which has been optimized for readability and distinguishability --
even for color blind users. However, you can still change your
preferred color in the Saros Preferences under "Saros" > "Appearance".
* Since the computation of the contribution annotations
(who wrote what) are CPU intense, we made this an optional feature.
You can now disable the computation in the preferences
under "Saros" > "Advanced" > uncheck "Show contribution annotations".
* Furthermore, only the session host can invite additional users to a
running session.
This was a neccessary regression to gain more stability and ensure
data integrity.
Additionally, you will find many minor fixes and usability improvements.
Check out the changelog below for more information.
For stability reasons some internal changes have been made.
As a consequence Saros 13.3.22 is *not* compatible with previous versions,
so that all session participants need Saros 13.3.22 (or later) to work
together.
Install and update Saros 13.3.22 via our Eclipse Update Site:
http://dpp.sf.net/update
For more information visit http://www.saros-project.org.
Please note that we upgraded our website, which got a new design and a
far better structure.

Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse ================================================= The Saros Team is proud to announce the release of version 12.9.28. This release brings you a couple of cool new features. * Session participants are now informed when one is looking at a non-shared file. Especially followers now know that the Follow Mode is just "paused" and still active. * Add an icon to the SarosView to open the preferences and remove the rarely used Chat Beep toggle icon from the Saros View toolbar. * The left viewport annotation is not displayed by default anymore, because it was confusing for users. It can be re-enabled in the Eclipse Preferences: General > Editors > Text Editors > Annotations Additionally, you will find many minor usability fixes. Check out the changelog (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dpp/files/Saros/DPP%2012.9.28/#readme) for more information. Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse ================================================= The Saros Team is proud to announce the release of version 12.7.27. This release brings you a couple of cool new features. * We switched from a synchronous to an asynchronous way of processing the incoming data which leads to a massive performance improvement on some Unix-like platforms (e.g. some Ubuntu and Mac machines). * We removed the feature "Scan Workspace" since it did not work the intended way. * The experimental features are now disabled by default. They can be enabled on the "Advanced" page in the Saros Preferences. Additionally, you will find some minor fixes. Check out the changelog (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dpp/files/Saros/DPP%2012.7.27/#readme) for more information. Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse ================================================= The Saros Team is proud to announce the release of version 12.7.6. This release brings you a couple of cool new features. [Performance] Various changes were made to reduce the data that needs to be transmitted during a session. [Improvement] Several improvements were made concerning the GUI. In the buddy context menu everything has icons now and the items which are used most of the time move to the top of the context menu. The amount of information and the way it is presented to the user was further improved. An example would be the progress dialog which is now displayed when files are sent during a session. [Improvement] The whiteboard can now save its contents to an image file and can now correctly transfer special characters. Additionally, you will find some important fixes. Check out the changelog (http://sourceforge.net/projects/dpp/files/Saros/DPP%2012.7.6/README/download) for more information. Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse ================================================= The Saros Team is proud to announce the release of version 11.9.30. This release brings you a couple of cool new features. First up is "needs-based synchronisation" and very useful feature for those of you collaborating on very large projects. With Saros you can already choose to share a subset of files with your peers, so that you don't have to spend time sharing huge amounts of data, but this meant that if you wanted collaborate on unshared files, they needed adding manually to the session. Now, with needs-based synchronisation turned on, Saros will monitor the files you work on; when you begin editing an unshared file, Saros will instantly and automatically share the file with everyone in the session. And secondly, we've greatly expanded the functionality offered by the shared whiteboard. With Saros you can draw lines, arrows, write text and add a nnotations to your shared sketches. You can even draw in different colours to make clear who drew what! Additionally, you will find some important fixes. Check out the changelog below. Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse ================================================= The Saros Team is proud to announe the release of version 11.9.30. As the saying goes, "given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow." In the last couple of months, Saros has benefitted from over a dozen additional pairs of eyeballs. The annual Freie Universität Berlin Software Engineering project saw teams of eager students working on the Saros code under the watchful eyes of the main team. Thanks to the students, 11.9.30 includes tons of new bugfixes. Look out for future release that will contain new features they created! Our main team too continued to produce great work. The Saros team is proud to announce the release of version 11.7.1. A number of very helpful new features have been introduced in the latest version. Firstly, for those users who use Saros to collaborate on large projects, our new partial sharing feature will help make your lives easier. Simply click on "Share Project" in the Saros drop-down menu and you can choose a subset of files to send to your peers. This reduces transmission time for those mammoth projects. Secondly, we have introduced UPnP support for routers that can take advantage of it, enabling users to add a port-mapping and obtain a better quality (SOCK5) connection. In addition to these features, there are a handful of bugfixes, including one which improves the amount feedback during the invitation. NOTE: The introduction of partial sharing means that compatibility with older versions of Saros is not guaranteed. To ensure Saros functions OK, make sure everyone is using the latest version. Saros - Distributed Party Programming for Eclipse ================================================= The Saros team is proud to announce the release of version 11.3.25, one of the most exciting and important releases in Saros's recent history. Why? The whole interface of Saros has been overhauled and redesigned to provide a mch more useable layout. Three of Saros's views (Session, Roster and Chat) have been merged into a single view from which you can manage your collaborations. This redesign is accompanied by a batch of other visual overhauls, including the setup and user account wizards. And finally, the annotation colours have been re-evaluated and adapted to improve suitability for colour blind people. Along with a whole raft of fixes and UI improvements, this makes the latest release of Saros a must have! IMPORTANT: This update breaks compatibility with previous versions of Saros. The Saros team is proud to announce the release of version 11.1.7. This release brings new features, improvements, and fixes. The integration of version control support (VCS) into Saros has been given its final consolidation. Developers can now collectively work on a project under version control and Saros will manage the co-ordination between the participants whether they have VCS software or not. We have also improved the perceived latency of Saros by lowering the interval time between which your updates are sent to your collaborators. In the unlikely event that this causes overload problems for the XMPP server, it can now be configured to a higher value. Install and update from Eclipse: http://dpp.sf.net/update. The Saros team is proud to announce the release of version 10.7.30. This release brings new features, improvements, and fixes. Firstly, Saros is now version control system (VCS) aware. You now have the choice of sharing a project by sending SVN repository information to your peers, so that they can interact directly with the repository. More functionality in this feature will follow in later releases! We've also improved the chat view a little. The visual layout is nicer, it has a configurable beep for received messages, and one joins/leaves the chat session automatically. Install and update from Eclipse: http://dpp.sf.net/update.
