this pretty frequently, but it seems to me that the help viewer is a bit

That's very weird. It means Port Authority isn't seeing Python on your
system. That call is to /usr/bin/python, which is Apple's system
installation of Python (I don't specify the directory because /usr/bin
is part of the default path that app bundles search).

Can you run Python in Terminal just to make sure it's installed? Try
"python" or "/usr/bin/python".

The only reason that I can think of (apart from a corrupted OS install)
that /usr/bin/python wouldn't be on your system is that you opted to not
install the BSD subsystem. If that's the case, then I'd advise
installing the BSD subsystem.

I suspect this is a problem with your machine, not Port Authority,
especially since you have report encountering similar problems with
other applications as well. Most likely it's corrupted Help Viewer
preferences. The link below has some advice on which files to trash/back
up to reset the Help Viewer preferences and cache:

I am finding that port authority is causing the help viewer to crash, not 
in particular for itself but system-wide---if I try to open the help 
window from the Finder, it immediately closes itself down.  The console 
reveals the following error message:

Open AppMain.tcl in /Contents/Resources/Scripts and uncomment the line
"console show." That will give more useful debugging output than running
~ wish on the main script.

As for your specific problems, version 0.3 is obsolete, so I'm
disinclined to figure out what's wrong with it. I've put together a
quick Jaguar build of version 0.6 here:

I haven't been maintaining regular builds for Jaguar because there was
almost no demand for it, and also because I'm dependent on packages
provided by a third party.

See if this works for you. If so, I will upload this to Sourceforge, and
I suppose I will begin keeping a concurrent Jaguar build (for as long as
the third-party packages are maintained).

Yes, it means that DarwinPorts isn't installed correctly, although I'm
not sure exactly what the problem is.

Can you try running "sudo /opt/local/bin/port selfupdate" from the
terminal? That should pull all the latest updates onto your machine.

in "/opt/local/bin/port list" . What does that show?

Nice to see this in one easy to open app instead of two. However, it 
doesn't solve my problem: I cannot get any ports to list in my viewer. 
I had this problem in the previous versions of Port View, and I have it 
now. Does anyone know what I might be missing?

Based on all the problems some folks are having with the zip file, and
also with some general interface bugs, I'm taking 0.4 offline and will
update to 0.5. The interface changes will be subtle but numerous enough
that it will be a new version (I have to change some back-end
functionality to fix the interface glitches). The new version will be
uploaded in a DMG file, which I've verified works with 0.4 better than
the zip format. I'll also work on creating a portfile for Port
Authority. All this will probably take a couple of weeks, so thanks for
your patience.

Overview:

Port Authority is an application that provides a graphical user
interface for the DarwinPorts package management system for Mac OS X.
DarwinPorts is a powerful command-line tool for installing and updating
a variety of Unix-based applications for the Mac. Its power, though,
comes at the cost of some complexity; in the past the only way to
utilize DarwinPorts was to type in various commands into the Mac's
Terminal application, which can be intimidating for those users without
a Unix background.

Port Authority aims to bring the power of DarwinPorts to the traditional
Mac users by providing an Aqua-native, user-friendly graphical interface
to DarwinPorts. Using a familiar combination of windows, icons, and
menus, Port Authority users can search, install, update, and remove
DarwinPorts programs and the DarwinPorts infrastructure itself.

To install, just download and move the application to your /Applications
directory. Delete your old /Applications/DGUI folder and make sure that
Port Authority is in the main /Applications folder.

What's New:

Version 0.4 is a major update that merges the functionality provided by
three programs (collectively known as DPGUI) into a single application.
You can now manage both DarwinPorts packages and the DarwinPorts
infrastructure itself from Port Authority. Support for the initial
installation of DarwinPorts is no longer provided because DarwinPorts
now comes with a point-and-click binary installer.

Port Authority now makes use of the Apple Help system, meaning that you
can now search our help documents to get the exact answer to your
question about Port Authority or DarwinPorts in general. As before, user
help for both Port Authority and updated DarwinPorts documentation is
included.

OK, we need to debug this. Can you do the following:

1. Go to PortView, right click, and select "Show Package Contents."
2. Navigate to /Contents/Resources/Scripts.
3. Find a file called "AppMain.tcl." Open it in a text editor (TextEdit
is fine).
4. About three or four lines down, you will see this line:

#show console

Remove the # from this line. Save the file.

5. Launch PortView as usual. There will be an additional window
(console) that will print error messages if there's a problem.
