Not obvious from the description how this happened, but likely that the conversion cannot handle huge files. It doesn't use streaming. When my kids were younger around 2011 I mainly encoded shorter videos and some 90 minute movies recorded from analogue broadcasts in what today would be seen as very low resolution formats.
