Joystick calibration no longer works with the XBOX360 Windows version with DOSBOX 0.74-2 or 0.74-3 with Wing Commander Privateer. It used to work as somebody can read here:
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=18960
I have had a further look down the road (using the GOG version of the game) and found out the following:
The game used to work if settings are set to the following:
joysticktype=auto
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false
https://www.gog.com/forum/wing_commander_series/privateer_1_and_2_joystick_support
Just "buttonwrap" was set to "true" here, but I don't think this is what makes the difference.
I had noticed, that the DOSBox version shipped with the game is not current. I updated it as described here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general_archive/how_to_update_dosbox/post3
However still no avail.
It appears to be some incompatibility with Windows 11, DOSBOX and the latest XBOX360 Windows drivers and the game.
I will send in a bug report with Windows 11 Feedback hub as well.
As it appears the XBOX360 Controller worked with older Windows versions with DOSBOX for this game, hope somebody cares enough to make it work again
I will attach a screenshot of the calibration error in the game
