I should begin by saying that I *love* the new math support
(i.e., the math directive and role).

That said, I have encountered a couple limitations of the
MathML support.

Which caused me to wonder: would MathJax be perhaps a possible
dependency for math support in HTML documents, at least as
an option?  (Note that this would remove the need for docutils
to translate the LaTeX input.)

Just thinking out loud ...
