Simple answer to Ping's complaint ("It's too flexible") ... scrape a different 
version of the spec. At each step of the functionality, present "the way to 
do it" with a little pointer off to "the variations you may use in doing it 
this way" :)

People are definitely uncomfortable with the flexibility you've given them. 
Unfortunate :)
