Mind, that the behaviour of `rst2odt` with the new "libpaper" version is similar to the current behaviour on systems without "libpaper/paperconf": the page size defaults to US-Letter and an "info" level message is printed. So it is no complete breakdown.

Also mind, that due to "US Letter" page width and height beeing stored in the default style sheet (docutils/writers/odf_odt/styles.odt), documents are generated with "US Letter" page size also on systems with properly working "libpaper" (but no "info" message is printed) unless the user uses a custom stylesheet with different page size!
This will be fixed in Docutils 0.20.1.

The latex to html/css code is quite impressive, but it's missing the `\\mod` command (as well as other similar commands like `\\pmod`. It should be a trivial thing to do.

However, a [transform](https://docutils.sourceforge.io/docs/ref/transforms.html)  testing for conformance could be sensible. It may walk over the document tree and for each node check that the parent node is an instance of the well-defined, small set of allowed parent nodes.
Ideas and patches are welcome.

Context:

[This](https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/45fa12aec8f508c224a1521cfe3ae597f1026264/Doc/tools/extensions/pyspecific.py#L149) call to `nested_parse` adds a `Paragraph` node to a `Paragraph` node,  this look forbidden by [the doc](https://docutils.sourceforge.io/docs/ref/doctree.html#body-elements), and it also look to misbehave sphinx-side, when translating the document, where we completly loose the nested paragraph once translated.

It renders properly though when **not** translated.

The linked `nested_parse` returns:

Indeed. I'm not sure if the different output from PyPy3 is actually intentional but I don't think it should cause a test failure anyway.

I quite probably miss something obvious but [admonition directives documentation](https://docutils.sourceforge.io/docs/ref/rst/directives.html#admonitions) is not clear in so far as it lists "admonition" as a specific admonition type then describes it as being a generic type (which requires a title).

rst2odt_prepstyles.py currently uses lxml to parse, modify and write XML.  The attached patch makes it use ElementTree instead, which has been part of Python's standard library since 2.5.

When citations appear in a parent that has no other siblings besides this single citation, a spurious `</div>` is generated resulting in invalid html code. It appears that this is because the opening `<div role="list" class="citation-list">` is not being generated. I've tracked it to this docutils failing to add an opening div for the citation list here:

It gets then closed here leading to the extra tag:

Basically, this is due to odd behaviour of previous_sibling: if index relative to parent is zero and there are no other siblings, it returns the node itself instead of None. This looks like a docutils bug, and the attached patch fixes  the issue.

In my personal experience, `pandoc` is more reliable than `latexml`, e.g. the current support for the latter in docutils does not automatically include amsfonts which prevents things like mathbb from working. In `pandoc` it Just Works.

Using the incredibly helpful `--use-bibtex=mybst,mybib` option, unless I provide targets for all the citation references, I do not get citation references in the text.  Instead the citation references marked as errors. Since I provide the citation info in ``mybib``, this seems completely pointless; can it be turned off?

Günter asked that I file this as a bug report.

docutils.io calls the function locale.getdefaultlocale, which is deprecated since Python 3.11 - https://docs.python.org/3/library/locale.html#locale.getdefaultlocale,

Hi!

I think https://sourceforge.net/p/docutils/code/8949/
introduced a bug in https://sourceforge.net/p/docutils/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/docutils/docutils/nodes.py#l1071
Not sure if you can split the string with a comma there.

It breaks a lot of code.
The error is:
