I'm going to go ahead with setting up a plugin registry tool similar to 
staff2 (it uses autonum too), to save myself some sanity on porting 
staff2 to staff3..

Once that's in place we should be able to evaluate using plugin strings 
instead of autonum easier, though it will require a significant amount 
of reprogramming at this point.
