I have the same problem with my R4 UNO and I got a reply to my ticket saying that this library is only good for Atmel microcontrollers. My R4 did NOT have that microcontroller, so maybe yours too?
I have ordered a new UNO R3 which I will test tonight or tomorrow and will try to report back.
I also ordered and received another DMX shield which did the same thing.

My R4 works fine otherwise, but even with the most basic code that blinks the onboard LED, when I install the shield, whether enabled or disabled, the R4 will not start running, the LED will not blink, and attempting to push a sketch into it yields the same exit status 1 error you reported.

Maybe we have the same problem. It would be nice if the seller of these shields posted SOMETHING that told us about compatibility. The only thing it says is RDM capabable. but when shopping for the R3 or R4 neither of them mention RDM.
