Most of the hostnames in the DNS server seem to be removed from the cache rather quickly (less then 5 minutes). Is there any simple way to increase this?

    Thanks,
    Chris

They expire as per expiry. The expiry varied b/w few seconds to few days. Expiry is specified by Authorized Server for that domain/zone. This is how DNS System work.

I have installed release 5.1 on a win2000 professional with SP4 as a service. I do not need DHCP and therefore have configured it to start only DNS.

      1) If I have not started DHCP server why do I get this line in Log :

      [14-Oct-07 17:08:45] Lease: 360 (sec)

      2) What does 'Error 10054' mean? Is it that one of my ISP DNS servers is not working?

      [14-Oct-07 17:10:48] Client 192.168.1.1, www.google.com Forwarded to DNS 208.67.222.222
      [14-Oct-07 17:10:48] Client 192.168.1.1, www.google.com resolved from Forwarding server as 208.67.217.230
      [14-Oct-07 17:10:48] Error 10054 Getting DNS Message
      [14-Oct-07 17:10:50] Client 192.168.1.1, www.google.co.in Forwarded to DNS 208.67.222.222
      [14-Oct-07 17:10:50] Client 192.168.1.1, www.google.co.in resolved from Forwarding server as 208.67.217.230
      [14-Oct-07 17:10:50] Error 10054 Getting DNS Message

      3) Where is Cache is stored? Is there any way I can see it's contents? I doubt nothing is being stored in the cache. Even after repeatedly visiting a site, I do not see the IP address in the status bar of FireFox?

Lease/Expiry is synonymous in Dual Server. It is the expiry for static hosts too, thats why it is shown. Cache is only done in memory, not in any file. This Server reads the files at startup and then only runs in memory only. The 10054 error comes when socket is closed by client, before server could read the message. Just ignore it.

Look at the log, it would say if it has resolved it from forwarding servers or cache. Windows too do its own caching for small time. In that case windows, do not even send queries to local DNS Server. Try resolving same address from another computer, it would resolve from cache. Or try some sites other than yahoo and google, you should see the message.

      Hello,

      Ref : Response of 2007-10-19 21:31

      1) What is 'static hosts' ?
      2) Does 'Dual DHCP DNS Server' read the Hosts file ? I am using win2KP.
      3) From your reply, am I to conclude that CACHE is valid only till system is not switched off AND after every boot up, CACHEing starts afresh.

      Thanks
