Yes, this is a bug, but I am not sure where (devmon, or SNMP_Session). > So it seems that devmon stop doing snmp get for a device when he got too > many snmp error for this device. > > How to be let devmon keep checking oids even if it got a lots of missing > iods ? As a workaround, on the devices that don't support this test, specify all the other tests that should be run on the device with the tests() option to the DEVMON tag in bb-hosts. I will try and see if I can fix the real bug sometime (or, have detection of devices determine which tests to run, based on whether required OIDS are present). Regards, Buchan |

Hi list, I am using Devmon version 0.3.0-beta4 reporting to hobbit 4.2.0 . I have create a new check on an existing template. This template report usage of the vpn (lan to lan and remote acces) on a cisco ASA. This new check works very well on a device that have vpn session. But when a device does not have any vpn session, some of the other snmp check on the device begin to fail. So it seems that devmon stop doing snmp get for a device when he got too many snmp error for this device. How to be let devmon keep checking oids even if it got a lots of missing iods ? Hello list, I'm running devmon version 0.3.1-beta1 on an ancient Red Hat Linux 7.3 . For the last 2-3 days, it has gone purple on BigBrother over 10 times a day. I've then run it with -vvvvv -debug option, and here is how it all ended. What else can I do to provide further info on this issue? The question (from a devmon perspective) isn't necessarily how nsclient gets it, but whether there is any SNMP agent that provides this information. If there is, we can collect it with devmon, if there isn't, we can't. It may be possible to have a separate Hobbit/Xymon extension for retrieving the data from nsclient, or a plugin for BBWin to collect the available WMI data (which nsclient collects), but this wouldn't be related to devmon. Thanks for the reply but... I am using the win2k3server template but it lacks what I am trying to get from the windows servers. I also have bbwin installed and it doesn't appear that I can use it to provide the perfmon data (that I know of). Although Cacti is able to retrieve disk queue length from Nagios/Nsclient via snmp I figure there must be a way for devmon to also get this information. But, the problem is I don't know exactly how Cacti is able to get the perfmon data through snmp/nagios/nsclient. There doesn't appear to be a specific OID for this information so I wonder how Cacti gets it and how to have devmon collect it also. Any ideas? If the data is available via SNMP, you can do it with devmon. If not, devmon can't help you. Have you looked at the microsoft-win2k3server template in svn: http://devmon.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/devmon/trunk/templates/microsof t- win2k3server/ With the template (and some configuration of Xymon), you should be able to get: -Graphs of CPU utilisation (per CPU) (I might not have enabled thresholds here yet) -Graphs of disk space utilisation with thresholds -Graphs of network utilisation per interface (with utilisation) -Graphs of memory utilisation (just "real" and "swap", this is what is available by snmp) -Services which are running In future I would like to add per-process resource utilisation - for Unix and Windows - (but, this requires some development in devmon). Additional templates should be possible for any other services that provide monitoring information via SNMP, as far as I know, Exchange and MSSQL server should be able to. I have recently setup a test environment with Xymon and Devmon. I also have a current Cacti environment setup and wondered if there is a way to have Devmon monitor some of the windows perfmon stats that Cacti can handle with Nagios & Nsclient. I want to be able to monitor disk queue length which can be obtained from perfmon. I have been able to do this with Cacti and figure there has to be some way to do this same thing with Devmon. Works a treat now. Thanks for the tip. Any ideas on what could be causing this one. The first time the script runs it works fine and displays all the items. Hi, Not sure if there is anyone out there?? To go with my branch limits issue, I have found another major issue. Again I am testing against a Citrix Netscaler. I have ditched the service and vserver scanning until I can work out why its failing. I am left with the following three tests. memory, cpu, health memory and cpu are obvious. health is a check of the branch that displays all the fan speeds, temps etc. Now memory and cpu work fine, but the health test will show up as "Alarming on (cpu0,cpu1)" It seams as if the cpu test is somehow infecting the health test. If I remove the cpu test, the health test works fine. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Pasted below are my templates in the order in which I believe they are run devmon.cfg is pretty much default. thanks Cam memory oids MemUsage : .1.3.6.1.4.1.5951.4.1.1.41.2.0 : leaf thresholds MemUsage : red : >80 : CPU Very High MemUsage : yellow : >70 : CPU High message Memory Usage: {MemUsage}% <!-- Physical {MemUsage}% --> cpu oids Name : .1.3.6.1.4.1.5951.4.1.1.41.6.1.1 : branch Usage : .1.3.6.1.4.1.5951.4.1.1.41.6.1.2 : branch thresholds Usage : red : >80 : CPU Very High Usage : yellow : >70 : CPU High message TABLE: nonhtml, noalarmsmsg {Name}| {Usage}% <!-- <br>CPU 5 min average: {Usage} --> health oids Name : .1.3.6.1.4.1.5951.4.1.1.41.7.1.1 : branch Value : .1.3.6.1.4.1.5951.4.1.1.41.7.1.2 : branch message TABLE: Name | Value {Name} | {Value} |

ERESTARTSYS (To be restarted) > > Any suggestions for fixes or further troubleshooting? This is a known issue ... but one that is (for me) quite difficult to fix. Of the 3 production boxes and 2 dev boxes/workstations we have running devmon, the most often we see it is about once in 5 days (but, usually more than 2 weeks between occurances, and this on the production boxes). It looks like the socketpair for communication between the master process and the worker process gives up, and I think this leaves the worker process in a loop it will not return from. Once there are no more worker processes with working communication, devmon just waits for them to answer, and they never respond. I think there is a relatively way to prevent this ... but as I can't try it and easily see if it has helped, I haven't got very far on resolving this myself. If the relatively easy way doesn't work, there is a more difficult way as well ... I'll try and send you a patch to try in the next few days. Regards, Buchan |

Hi, I am trying to get Devmon working against a Citrix Netscaler. It is a load balancing/ssl offload type device that has a lot of variable OID's depending on vservers and services etc. Against the Name and State of the VServers I am calling the OID with a branch tag and displaying in the table on the message. For some reason the first time I run devmon (using devmon -f at least) it will display every item and send them through to Xymon no worries. I refresh the xymon page and every VServer is displayed. The next time it updates it stops at the 42nd item on the list. I thought maybe it was the length of the OID, but when I added a new VServer with a short OID, it indexed that correctly and pushed the now 43rd item off the list. (OID's are listed from shortest to longest when you snmpwalk the tree) Has anyone come across this before? I will start trying to debug the code, but if anyone has any ideas I will try it out. It is weird that it works the first time round, I guess proving its not a xymon or devmon limit. I have seen something in the code/logs about not reparsing or walking the trees or something the second time round if its already in the system. Maybe the variable that is storing the items is limited or something? thanks Cam |

Thank you for the response! Well, the error has changed some - I guess that could be a step in the right direction. Note that you can specify the template to use in the bb-hosts file. I have been monitoring a few Windows 2003 servers with devmon, you may want to look at the template I just committed in svn: http://devmon.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/devmon/trunk/templates/microsof t- win2k3server/ However, this template will (for now) only work if you set it explicitly in bb-hosts with DEVMON:model(microsoft;win2k3server) However, please make a copy of it, renamed to e.g. microsoft-win2kserver, and change the sysdesc to be just: sysdesc: Windows 2000 Version 5.0 and see if devmon will pick it up without manually setting it. I have just installed devmon along with xymon and have xymon working fine. I have installed devmon and I am having trouble setting up my first host which is a win2000 server. I have snmp setup on the client to accept connections from my devmon server and can confirm that by running devmon in verbose debug mode. I get a sysdesc that matches the sysdesc from the system (kratos): root@161mon:/home/xymon/devmon# ./devmon -vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv --debug -readbbhosts ... This way exceptions could be defined easily. Let's say you have one switch where you don't want to monitor interfaces but only cpu, temperature, etc.. Currently I use tests() or model() in bb-hosts. With you suggestion it would be possible to create a template inheriting only the required tests. However, since you filed the bug anonymously ... I am taking a look at this issue, for if_dsc and if_err. However, I don't like the current layout where we have the same content in many different templates, but with some very small differences for some templates. For example, should I now change 87 tests to use HC counters instead? I would prefer to add template inheritance, and have *two* IFMIB templates, one for non-HC, and one for HC counters (well, maybe 4, two for IFMIB, two for Cisco IFMIB). Regards, Buchan |
