Hello everyone, I have several Cisco routers that have multiple interfaces with different IP addresses. I am polling them from Xymon using the option to test multiple IP addresses and generate an alert only if all interfaces are down ( best case). Is there any way to tell devmon to perform snmp polls on more than one interface so that if one is down and another is up I can still get interface status info? thank you Regards Lorenzo Chiavacci |

Is it perhaps caused by the fact > that the OIDs for which a test is defined are used themselves in the > computation of other OIDs in another test? To answer my own question: the undefined threshold is indeed caused by the use of the OID in another test (template). In this case an OID named ifInMcPps is defined in both test if_dsc and if_nuc. In test if_dsc it is an intermediary result needed to compute the total packet rate through an interface of a switch. In test if_nuc a threshold is defined, in order to get an alert if the attached device sends too many multicast packets. In module dm_tests.pm, function tests the hash %oids is cleared when handling the next device. The tests defined for the device are performed in alphabetical order of the test (template) name. At the start of a test, information about the OIDs is copied into hash %oids. In my case the information about OID ifInMcPps will be copied into hash %oids when test if_dsc is to be performed. Upon completion of the test, variable $oids{ifInMcPps}{val} will be defined. Next test if_nux is performed. In this test OID ifInMcPps is also defined, in an identical manner. However, function oid_hash will not collect any additional information as $oids{ifInMcPps}{val} is defined. Thus the threshold definition in this test is NOT copied, causing the threshold values to be unknown, and causing no threshold tests to be performed. There are a number of ways around this problem, such as: - use different names for effectively the same OID in different tests; - order the templates in a suitable way by renaming them; and - move the threshold definition to the template with the first occurance of the OID which Devmon will see when performing the tests. I've done the latter as it does not increase the run-time of Devmon and keeps the names of the tests easier to remember. A permanent, better solution might be to copy the threshold definition in function oid_hash unconditionally, thus applying the following patch: --- dm_tests.pm.org 2011-08-09 09:56:13.000000000 +0200 +++ dm_tests.pm 2011-08-19 08:33:40.000000000 +0200 @@ -140,15 +140,16 @@ # For now we will copy the data from the template and snmp for my $oid (keys %{$tmpl->{'oids'}}) { + # First we do threshold data + if(defined $tmpl->{'oids'}{$oid}{'thresh'}) { + $oids->{$oid}{'thresh'} = $tmpl->{'oids'}{$oid}{'thresh'}; + } + # Dont hash an OID more than once next if defined $oids->{$oid}{'val'}; # Put all the info we got on the oid in (sans transform data) # in the oids hash ref - # First we do threshold data - if(defined $tmpl->{'oids'}{$oid}{'thresh'}) { - $oids->{$oid}{'thresh'} = $tmpl->{'oids'}{$oid}{'thresh'}; - } # Then exceptions if(defined $tmpl->{'oids'}{$oid}{'exceptions'}) { I have not tested the patch above, thus I do not know if it works without showing undesirable side effects. Hello, in our Cisco-based network there is somewhere a source of broadcast or multicast traffic, which causes huge packet losses in the core of the network. This source is about once a week during a short period active. In order to find this source, a (temporary) template to measure and check the incoming multicast and broadcast packet rates is created. The template, shown in the attachment, exhibits one problem: it reports that the threshold value is undefined. Non-unicast packet rates above the yellow threshold do not result in a status change, which is consistent with the threshold value being undefined. The first part of the status message, as shown in a browser, is: <b>Non-unicast traffic rate:</b> Input rate alert thresholds: yellow=Undefined [p/s], red=Undefined [p/s] Output rate alert thresholds: None <table border=1 cellpadding=5> <tr><th>If name</th><th>Multicast rate in</th><th>Broadcast rate in</th><th>Multicast rate out</th><th>Broadcast rate out</th></tr> As far as I can tell the template definition is correct. A test run, with options "-1 -h <ASwitch>" did not show any errors or warnings. We are using Devmon r216. Has someone an idea of what is wrong? Is it perhaps caused by the fact that the OIDs for which a test is defined are used themselves in the computation of other OIDs in another test? I'm not sure if I'm getting the error because I'm using the temporary aliases dfGBytesUsedTmp & dfGBytesTotalTmp in the MATH calculations dfPercent, dfGBytesTotal & dfGBytesUsed rather than a OID value from the oids file. Hi Wim, Thanks for that. Tested and working. I've been trying to find how to do the "not equal" in a regular expression for a few days because of another issue I was looking at and now I know it's easy to find information about negative look-ahead assertion. Couldn't find it before though so this is very much appreciated. Neil. -----Original Message----- From: W.J.M. Nelis [mailto:Wim...@nl...] Sent: 11 August 2011 14:57 To: dev...@li... Hi all, Is there any way either through using the Transforms file or the Thresholds file that I can set my severity to red if the returned string from an OID is not equal to a fixed string value. To elaborate a little, I am looking at monitoring an IBM XIV storage device via SNMP and Devmon. I have the oid .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.77.1.1.1.1.0 for which I currently get the value "Full Redundancy". This is an acceptable value. If the value is not equal to "Full Redundancy" I want Xymon to turn Red but I can't seem to find a way to configure this. I've tried finding a list of possible statuses so that I could specify the others in the thresholds file but I've been unable to find any information on this. The way devmon prior to (as-yet-unreleased) 0.3.1 worked is that after 3 empty responses (e.g. if the device doesn't support the OID requested), it would give up. In current svn, it only gives up after 3 empty responses that had an error message. I guess I should really try and get a new release out ASAP. Regards, Buchan |

I am running > Devmon 0.3.1.-beta1. How did you create this template? From scratch? For Cisco-based networking equipment, it is usually easiest to copy a template for a similar device. The only complication is that some devices use IF-MIB v1 (with no ifName or ifAlias, but with an ifDescr), where others use IF-MIB v2. On Cisco devices, ifName and ifDescr are similar, but differ in the abbreviations of interface names, and ifAlias typically contains the port 'description'. > I have been spinning my wheels for two days. Have you tried just copying all the if_* tests from e.g. the cisco-7206 or cisco-6509 template? If so, and things didn't work, could you provide more detail? Regards, Buchan |

There shouldn't be any real complications here, as this looks like a standard IF-MIB usage, ifTable is usually a single table indexed by the same index. The example given for the INDEX transform is the actual reason it was created, where the index is not provided as a value, and can only be seen as the suffix of the OID, and is used in a *different* table. But, I'll reply in more detail to your other mail. Regards, Buchan |

Hi all, Can anyone take pity on me and give me a hand getting my oids, transforms, and message file to work with the below scenario? This is my first new template> I have gotten the cpu and memory tests working including the graphs, they reference a series of single (leaf) oids, no repeating data and no need to access data via an Index. I am running Devmon 0.3.1.-beta1. I have been spinning my wheels for two days. Here is the setup. I have a table in the MIB which is not indexed by a sequence of 1, 2, 3, etc. but based on number which appears to drop from the sky. This number however can be found in the ifIndex table by the same index number. So the first entry in ifIndex is 151126017 and at 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.1.151126017 you will obtain the integer 151126017. Like: ifIndex.151126017 = INTEGER: 151126017 If you use this number to access the ifName table you will get the name of the port on the switch. Like: ifName.151126017 = STRING: Vlan1 I can pull these individual entries via devmon from the MIB with hardcoded oids and using the leaf type. That is of little use. I can not figure out the proper syntax for the INDEX transforms entry to pull the full set of ifIndex entries nor how to format the proper transforms entries to use those Index entries to access the entries in the MIB for the ifName table. I have tried many different entries for the INDEX and CHAIN transforms with no luck. Usually I end up with an error message "Missing repeater data for primary OID <variable>" When using snmpwalk I can get the data just fine. Pointing snmpwalk at oid 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.1 for the ifIndex field I get back: IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126017 = INTEGER: 151126017 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126022 = INTEGER: 151126022 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126116 = INTEGER: 151126116 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126136 = INTEGER: 151126136 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126220 = INTEGER: 151126220 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126236 = INTEGER: 151126236 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126252 = INTEGER: 151126252 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126260 = INTEGER: 151126260 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126261 = INTEGER: 151126261 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126266 = INTEGER: 151126266 IF-MIB::ifIndex.151126268 = INTEGER: 151126268 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436207616 = INTEGER: 436207616 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436211712 = INTEGER: 436211712 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436215808 = INTEGER: 436215808 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436219904 = INTEGER: 436219904 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436224000 = INTEGER: 436224000 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436228096 = INTEGER: 436228096 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436232192 = INTEGER: 436232192 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436236288 = INTEGER: 436236288 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436240384 = INTEGER: 436240384 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436244480 = INTEGER: 436244480 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436248576 = INTEGER: 436248576 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436252672 = INTEGER: 436252672 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436256768 = INTEGER: 436256768 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436260864 = INTEGER: 436260864 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436264960 = INTEGER: 436264960 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436269056 = INTEGER: 436269056 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436273152 = INTEGER: 436273152 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436277248 = INTEGER: 436277248 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436281344 = INTEGER: 436281344 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436285440 = INTEGER: 436285440 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436289536 = INTEGER: 436289536 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436293632 = INTEGER: 436293632 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436297728 = INTEGER: 436297728 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436301824 = INTEGER: 436301824 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436305920 = INTEGER: 436305920 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436310016 = INTEGER: 436310016 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436314112 = INTEGER: 436314112 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436318208 = INTEGER: 436318208 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436322304 = INTEGER: 436322304 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436326400 = INTEGER: 436326400 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436330496 = INTEGER: 436330496 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436334592 = INTEGER: 436334592 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436338688 = INTEGER: 436338688 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436342784 = INTEGER: 436342784 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436346880 = INTEGER: 436346880 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436350976 = INTEGER: 436350976 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436355072 = INTEGER: 436355072 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436359168 = INTEGER: 436359168 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436363264 = INTEGER: 436363264 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436367360 = INTEGER: 436367360 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436371456 = INTEGER: 436371456 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436375552 = INTEGER: 436375552 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436379648 = INTEGER: 436379648 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436383744 = INTEGER: 436383744 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436387840 = INTEGER: 436387840 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436391936 = INTEGER: 436391936 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436396032 = INTEGER: 436396032 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436400128 = INTEGER: 436400128 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436731904 = INTEGER: 436731904 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436740096 = INTEGER: 436740096 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436748288 = INTEGER: 436748288 IF-MIB::ifIndex.436756480 = INTEGER: 436756480 When using snmpwalk I can get the data just fine. HI all, I'm trying to create my own template (first one) for a new Cisco Nexus n7000 switch. I see in the documentation the INDEX transforms option but the example is not very good and I can't get it to work. Unfortunately with the new Nexus switches the ifName, ifAlias, etc. is not stored using a number which is just incremented, but by an Index you can find in the ifIndex field (OID = .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.1 ). So to get the name you need the ifIndex and then you can get the correct ifName. Like: IF-MIB::ifIndex.436207616 = INTEGER: 436207616 IF-MIB::ifDescr.436207616 = STRING: Ethernet1/1 Can anyone help me get a correct format for the INDEX transforms entry? I made some improvements early in the year, which are running on most of my production boxes. I would like to make a stable release quite soon. Unfortunately, in March, quite soon was hopefully within a month, and now, it is still about the same ... > Hope this good project is not dying... Unfortunately we have many urgent projects due for 1 Sept, so I don't think there will be a new release before then. I would love more people to test the current svn, and give feedback, specifically on any open bugs. I have some emails destined for the devmon-devel list in draft regarding the last few issues, but unfortunately that has been in my draft folder for some time. I will try and send that out this week.
