I talked with Heiko about some additions to the devil-linux distro, and he recommend me to join this list and ask for comments, so here it goes: (hope this doesn't start a flamewar :P > i've been using it [dl distro] > for a while, and i have a list of things that could be done to > improve devil-linux, and would like to comment them with you > (maybe you or others are working on the same thing): > > Software adds: > - vtun (for creating virtual tunnels against other machines). > Small program, easy setup and lot of options. > > - oident (an ident deamon with masquerade/nat support). > > - wondershaper (or my own script) to use all the > download/upload bandwith at the same time, prioritize > interactive traffic, etc. (this will boost dl as a router box) > > > Software changes: > - modify djbdns setup to use syslog as the logging option. > Currently djbdns is logging to hd/ram > on /etc/service/djbdns/log, and although logs are self-rotating > (not too much space used, 10 files from about 100kbs), i > would like to centralize all logging to syslog (looks clearer for > me) and get ride of the files :). This has been done, but a few remarks should be made. dnscache produces a lot of output (for me its ok to have all the messages logged to syslog, but maybe someone finds that there are just too many syslogs entries) tinydns doesn't have that problem. when logging with a remote syslog the dnscache daemon, i've found a "deathlock". for each entry on syslog, syslog-ng tries to resolve the host that sends the log. so if you're using dnscache on the box with the syslog-ng server, you'll have to: a) use_dns(off) on syslog-ng.conf b) comment out the verbose output of dnscache (requieres modifiying the sources) how to use syslog-ng with dnscache/tinydns : /etc/service/dnscache/log# ls main run status supervise /etc/service/dnscache/log# cat run #!/bin/sh #exec setuidgid dnslog multilog t ./main exec logger -i -t dnscache the same for tinydns. just comment out the multilog option and use logger for loggin. -- -- Use of a keyboard or mouse may be linked to serious injuries or disorders.
