Hi!
Just wrote a small script that would unpack each available
package on my Devil-Linux 0.5b6 and calculate the unpacked size.
I have to say that those are not all packages but the ones that
I selected via "make menuconfig".
package size [KB]
ARPWATCH 154
CRON 53
DDUP 22
FREESWAN 1052
IPROUTE2 270
ISC_BIND 2771
ISC_BIND_UTILS 2547
ISC_DHCP 1723
JFTPGW 150
JOE 210
LVM 810
NTP 1516
OPENSSH 1919
OPENSSL_BIN 1102
PERL 16165
POPTOP 54
POSTFIX 4392
PPP 278
PPTP_CLIENT 46
SQUID 2180
TCPDUMP 1318
UCD_SNMP 2609
WGET 182
========
SUM [KB] 41523
To complement the picture we need the ramdisk usage of the
BASE-System, which is (at least for my config) 16132 KB.
Let's say that the BASE-System and an extended config needs
18000 KB.
So for a full install of the packages above the ramdisk
needs to be at least of the size of:
59523 KB = approx. 58,2 MB
I would suggest using at least 96 MB of ram for this full install.
Which would leave approx. 32 MB for running all the services.
I would also suggest to create files on the cd that reflect the
size of the available packages.
eg. (as seen from the running system) /cdrom/packages/CRON.size
with the content "53\n". (for the value see list above)
So a script could be written that loads /etc/sysconfig/software,
and based on those settings, calculates the needed ramdisk size
and would also give recommendations on the amount of ram that
needs to be installed.
PS: If you want a copy of this script mail me.
If you'd want to run this script don't forget to configure your
harddisk support because it's advisable to run this on a mounted
partition.
PPS: I'm thinking about adjusting the ramdisk size on the
amount of installed memory. But no solution yet.
