I just took a quick look at this document:
http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx_systems_guide.pdf
They list that SuSE 8.2 is not supported in the MP config on the newer ESX
servers. Wasn't 8.2 still based on Kernel 2.4 ?
Maybe there's a general issue with ESX and Kernel 2.4 with MP.

Maybe you should throw that question at the VMWare support.
