You can (fairly) easily add software to DL. Take a look at our documentation on the website on how to compile your own version, that's where you'll have to start. Then you'll have to fight your way through figuring out how we do things and then add your own stuff. Please sign up on the developer mailinglist if you have any questions related to building/customizing DL. Hello colleagues, I have tried to make a present for myself and other DL fans by XMas (later by NY) with massive features update for 1.3... It looks like I'll do it only after my vacation (in a week). What I've made already: - kernel 2.6.27.x (2.6.27.10) because it was announced as a LTS kernel. - update of a couple tens of packages - emphasis on NAS/SAN features - new network block device (iSCSI and DST), new network file system (a-la pNFS) - unfortunately without init files yet. - a few build system cleanups in order to handle dependencies more correctly - workaround for the mysterious bug with coping DL image to RAM (I guess it's something with rounding of an allocated size calculation). - etc Stay tuned! Maybe there is an issue creating LVM2 volume groups (pvcreate with -M2 switch) on DL 1.2, although I don't see why? It works for me on DL 1.3. But LVM1 volume groups (i.e. pvcreate without the -M2 switch) definitely should work on DL1.2, because that was my original setup (and the volume group on my production DL server is still LVM1 in fact). Or perhaps your difficulties with LVM and reiserfs will just have to remain one of life's hidden mysteries. Dominic |

For some reason when I was creating the volume, it would not let me use the -M2 switch. I can't remember the exact error it gave me, but I just dropped it hoping it wouldn't be an issue. That's probably why reiserfs wouldn't work for me. I also had the same problem as before, where my keyboard would not input anything to the console until I rebooted once with a mouse added to the system. This is with a different keyboard, the rest of the setup is the same. At least I knew how to fix it... not that it was really an issue, I could putty into the system just fine. If anyone is interested, I will write up a bit of a walkthrough on how to install and configure VLC so you can use your server as a media box as well. Once I get it working. Pleased to hear you got it all working! I am puzzled by the problem you encountered trying to use reiserfs, I just tested this and it worked fine for me (with LVM2-format volume group [i.e. -M2 switch on pvcreate line], as I suggest). Thanks for all the help... the only change I had to make was when I was setting up the logical volumes I had to change mkfs.reiserfs /dev/devil-linux/home to mke2fs -j /dev/devil-linux/home because for some reason it did not want to mount the /home directory otherwise. Everything is now running smoothly, all my boxes talk to each other without fighting. The next project is to set up VLC and the proper drivers for my video card so I can play movies directly on my tv with s-video out. Hi, I as you do now mostly use scp :) However if I remember correctly with vsftp I think you need to add the user to the file /etc/vsftpd.users or set it as disabled. The file is just a username per line. I remember disabling the chroot also for systems with just a admin user in users file. Still scp is probably a better choice in most cases. Hi, following the *Heiko´s* suggestion.... I´m trying to compile * devil-linux* sources and then I will procede to add some new software which I need for my project.... I follow http://www.devil-linux.org/documentation/1.2.x/ch03.html guide.... and some issues arose..... so, I will try to explain what I want to do and what problems I found... *ISSUE:* I need to have *devil-linux* on a hard disk in order to install new software and then test it "on fly". This hard disk will be in a virtual machine (* VM-DL_ROUTER*), to perform tests which involves clients and servers (some virtual machines)... So... I have a virtual machine which works as a router... and some others virtual machines which produce trafic between those... through *VM-DL_ROUTER *. *POSIBLE SOLUTION:* As I saw bebore, I´m trying to compile *devil-linux* sources and add new software in the way that is explained in -> http://www.devil-linux.org/documentation/1.2.x/ch03s04.html#d0e1879..... After the necessary software has been added, I will procede to compile devil-linux.... then I will have a new devil-linux inside dist folder..... and I will use it to test the new software... *QUESTIONS:* 1) Can I put the content of dist folder in a hard-disk and after added grub, boot devil-linux? 2) There is another way to do this? *PROBLEMS:* At compiling time I found the following problem: ================================================================================================= root:/build# cat /build/tmp/LOGS/build/dev86 make[1]: Entering directory `/build' You have to call make with one of the following options: menuconfig .. select which options should be added prepare ..... prepare system for compilation build ....... compile all sources install ..... install everything on the CD and iso ......... create an ISO image clean ....... cleans etc and ISO working folders :) mrproper .... cleans complete working folder :) unpack ...... unpack all available sources dist ........ creates files for distribution in ./dist make[1]: Leaving directory `/build' removing debug symbols from binaries make[1]: Entering directory `/build' executing prepare with option install executing create_cd_dirs with option install executing create_etc with option install executing copy_base with option install executing distcc with option install (in /build/tmp/distcc-2.17) executing binutils with option install (in /build/tmp/binutils-2.16.1) executing gcc with option install (in /build/tmp/gcc-3.3.2) executing glibc with option install (in /build/tmp/glibc-2.3.2) ERROR /build/scripts/glibc install failed check log file /build/tmp/LOGS/install/glibc for details make[1]: *** [install] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/build' ================================================================================================= ================================================================================================= root:/build# cat /build/tmp/LOGS/install/glibc /build/scripts/glibc: cd: ../glibc-build: No such file or directory ================================================================================================= *STEPS TO COMPILE:* * * ================================================================================================= make unpack make menuconfig (using default config) make prepare build install iso dist ================================================================================================= I will try to fix it when I leave work.... I upgrade your firewall's with devil-linux-1.3.6-2008-10-28-i686. Here are some remark: - Thanks for upgrading pppd it is working again. Because of the change to udev /dev/ppp is not created and ppp_generic is not loaded. I have edit /etc/init.d/pptpd to load ppp_generic. But this is not a ideal solution (i work for our setup). - Thanks for racoon update. The logs are nice and quiet. Because directory /var/racoon is missing so there for i have added '[ -d /var/racoon ] || mkdir /var/racoon' to /etc/init.d/ipsec-tools Thanks for the good work. -- Peter |

Lincoln Pleased to hear you got it sorted. The mouse (absence of) is not the culprit. Perhaps your media buttons upset DL? If you can't get your Samba fileserver working after looking through my help page, which was written by a Linux newbie (me) for Linux newbies, let us know and I, or others here better qualified, will try to help. I would also welcome any improvements/corrections to my text. Dom http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/dlsetup Lincoln Johnson wrote: > Dom > > Thanks for your suggestions... Dom Thanks for your suggestions... I managed to fix the problem, but I will record the issues in more detail here in case anyone has the same problem. I was unable to type anything once the login prompt came up, could not log in. I could log in through SSH using putty. The keyboard would work fine until the moment it did the system-up beeps. I know this because it would display ^] characters if I held down the escape key, but would stop once the beeps started. It was not a keyboard issue (as far as I could tell, it worked fine until the login prompt appeared). The keyboard is a standard PS/2 Dell keyboard with media buttons on the top. For some reason, once I plugged in a mouse to the system, everything worked fine. Linux Kernel 2.4.36.6 Devil-Linux V1.2.15-i686-SMP Now I just need to figure out why DL isn't playing nice with my windows boxes. This is my first time using a linux setup, so I expect that I will be posting questions/problems here a fair bit over the coming week or so. Lincoln: Just to help us understand, at what point do you get this problem? Can you type 'root' at the login prompt? Can you get logged in? Could it be a physical problem with your keyboard? Do you have another keyboard you could try? Is it a standard keyboard and/or did you set the keyboard type correctly in DL Setup? Is the keyboard plugged in correctly? :-) Is it USB keyboard? I have never tried USB keyboard with DL, I guess it should work fine but if you have PS/2 keyboard it would be worth trying that... Alternatively, can you login remotely? If you chose to include SSHD in Setup/Services, and set up your ethernet card correctly, you should be able to log in remotely over a network - you would have to find out the ip address, your router's configuration web page can probably help with this. I've done a search through the archives, but haven't been able to find anything to help me with this... I'm setting up a new install of DL to run as a file server at home, and after running through the initial config/reboot, the computer has decided to no longer recognize any keyboard inputs, but only after the system-up beeps. It will accept keyboard input up until the second that it starts the beeps, then it stops. It just stays at the login: prompt. I don't know what to do here... please help? Thank you in advance. |

I agree, this should go into at least the INPUT one.
If we want to prevent any leaking, then we should add it to FORWARD
and OUTPUT also.
Opinions ?
