It was a step-by-step process, but I basically I ended up replacing my 3ware sata raid controller with a LSI1068E one (supermicro has a cheap one), replaced the NIC with a Intel based Gig desktop card and also ended up replacing my board/cpu/ram since I wanted the hw virtualization support. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. |

I'd love to be able to run ESXi at home on an old PC, but I haven't attempted it yet. (and I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on "supported" server hardware) What problems did you run into? What hardware did you replace to make it run? - BS |

Hi all, I will shortly begin replacing 30+ firewalls with new hardware (NexCom NSA 1042N8), and I wonder what release I should go for, 1.2.n or 1.4RCxx... What's the correct way to turn up the MTU on a network interface? The default is 1500, so on a bonded gig interface, it does not really help the speed above a single gig interface. I did not see the flag in /etc/init.d/network , so is there somewhere else to set the default? I am still on Devil 1.2.15, unfortunately. Thanks, Brad Landis |

Gordon, We have used several fanless flash-based units from http://linitx.com/(based in the UK) - follow links to " Home <http://linitx.com/> | LEX Embedded Systems<http://linitx.com/viewcategory.php?catid=116&pp=116>| LIGHT <http://linitx.com/viewcategory.php?catid=118&pp=116,118>". The fanless units are totally silent for home use. We have also used a couple of their rack-mounted dual-motherboard systems. We had one that got cooked, and learnt the hard way not to sandwich them tightly between switches. Give them some air-flow and they have been fine for us. Regards - Steve |

I'm using several PC Engines' Alix2c3 cards. Very stable, cheap and fast. Now the alix3c3 has been superseded by alix2d3. Take a look at http://www.pcengines.ch/alix2d3.htm Marcello Il giorno ven, 02/10/2009 alle 13.32 -0400, Gordon Russell ha scritto: > Does anybody have suggestions for fanless boxes that they are running DL > on, and happy with? -- I've always run DL firewall on surplus desktop > hardware, but am looking to buy some fanless mini-itx or some such > devices, preferably w/ dual-nic but if not, then at least a pci slot to > accomodate additional nic(s). > > thanks for any pointers. > > Gordon > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Come build with us! theres no need to buy a fan less box, just remove the fans you have, and drill extra holes all round. your power supply will always need a fan. i have a large tower case with a cooler master hyperz600 (any cpu cooler > 800g is a good cooler) which sits next to the power supply fan. i find a large case is cooler than a small one. on the top i have cut out holes and placed metal mesh on the top. i replaced the side door with metal mesh. i use a compact flash drive instead of a hard drive and i dont use a cd-rom drive, all that stuff is in another computer in the garage. the front of the case has everything removed and is covered with metal mesh, so the whole case breathes and the only fan is on the power supply which is pretty quiet. theres no really 100% fanless system unless you use a thin client which has no pci slots _________________________________________________________________ Search jobs from NZ's #1 job site 1000s of jobs online right now! http://clk.atdmt.com/NMN/go/157639089/direct/01/ |

Gordon, I've been using this box from CyberTron: http://www.cybertronpc.com/Customkititems~kc~PCSERQPLXL1010~PCc~SERVERS.htm <http://www.cybertronpc.com/Customkititems%7Ekc%7EPCSERQPLXL1010%7EPCc%7ESERVERS.htm> But I now see they also offer an Atom based box: http://www.cybertronpc.com/Customkititems~kc~SVQXT1020~PCc~SERVERS.htm <http://www.cybertronpc.com/Customkititems%7Ekc%7ESVQXT1020%7EPCc%7ESERVERS.htm> Great boxes, from SuperMicro at a great price. I have Devil on one and pfSense on two others with out any hitches. Does anybody have suggestions for fanless boxes that they are running DL on, and happy with? -- I've always run DL firewall on surplus desktop hardware, but am looking to buy some fanless mini-itx or some such devices, preferably w/ dual-nic but if not, then at least a pci slot to accomodate additional nic(s). thanks for any pointers. For as much help as you and the Devil project have been I'd be glad to help out with keeping documents updated. I've sent you a private message with my email address if you'd like a hand. As for the TOMOYO stuff, it wasn't fixed for me in the grsecurity file. I always run an update script I made that checks out the latest from CVS and runs update_src; a fixed grsecurity wasn't in there. If it IS in there perhaps I have my CVS checkout command wrong. In either case let me know :) Thanks, Kyle -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Prepare-getting-error-in-fixdep.c-tp25619820p25703606.html Sent from the devil-linux-discuss mailing list archive at Nabble.com. |
