in your previous email you stated that you use a 512tmb compact flash card, when i look at the used size on my flash stick the installation is 464mb. knowing a 512 cf card is more closely to 500mb or even a bit less, it not has that much headroom. So i can imagine you truly run out of space Dominic has helped me very well with setting up my DL system, and i must say that i'm very happy with my dl server best regards Gudy, Saigon On Mon, 13 Jun 2011 22:39:52 +0700, <gd...@tx...> wrote: > OK, I just tried the obvious (using install-on-usb without chrooting > first) and it worked. > SORRY ! > > Gary Stewart > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > EditLive Enterprise is the world's most technically advanced content > authoring tool. Yes I think this script cannot work if you are chroot'ed, maybe we could alter it to check for that first? Hi Dominic, Before reading my emails I tried the (blindingly) obvious and ran install-on-usb without chrooting first and it seems to have worked. I did get a warning message from Debian that I was low on disk space which is highly unlikely because I am using an 512 MB CompactFlash. I've seen this before and believe it is some kind of partition problem but i don't remember exactly what I did to fix it. Anyway, thanks for your quick reply. I suggest you run install-on-usb from the directory that contains the bootcd.iso. It should then find the file and suggest it as the default at the 'Enter DL source' prompt. Hi, When running the install-on-usb script I get this message: install-on-usb ============== This will install the Devil Linux ISO image to a disk device (USB/SCSI/IDE) and make it bootable, assuming that your PC can boot this device. Select which bootloader you want to use [default 1]: 1) SysLinux 2) SysLinux with serial console 3) Grub 4) Grub with serial console 5) Lilo (doesn't work yet) Choice: 4 Select Baud Rate for the serial console [default 1]: 1) 2400 2) 4800 3) 9600 4) 19200 5) 38400 6) 57600 7) 115200 Choice: 5 Enter DL source (DL image file or CD device) -> dist/devil-linux-1.4.3-2011-05-09-i686/bootcd.iso cat: /proc/mounts: No such file or directory Unsupported image format: Install failed! syncing and unmounting (this could take a while) The chroot /proc directory is completely empty (I assume this is where it is looking). I've tried running it from /build/data as well as /build/data/dist/devil-linux-1.4.3-2011-05-09-i686 with the same results. I've also tried running it with the CompactFlash device (using a CF to USB converter) mounted before chrooting after chrooting producing the same message. Once again this worked with my previous setup (Debian Etch 32 bit with the last 2.4 kernel version of Devil Linux) I am now building 1.4.3 installed on Debian Lenny (32 bit). Thanks, Gary Stewart |

Hi guys. I know is a bit of a strange question, but as I can't find the answer via Google I'll ask it anyway, what version of Python is bundled with 1.4.2? and if it's below 2.6, how easy would it be to upgrade it? Thanks, Chris. |

I confirm that the new build does not resolve the fundamental samba issue, but the workaround is still okay. It is possible that Samba 3.6 will help, I see there is a change there (in 3.6.0rc1 source3/include/vfs_macros.h) to SMB_VFS_REALPATH code - which is where the problem lies (ref my posting here 21 Jan 2011). However a comment at http://www.faqs.org/docs/securing/chap29sec287.html (referring admittedly to a much older version of Samba) suggests that 'wide links = yes' speeds up Samba significantly. Hi,
I uploaded the latest CVS build to the testing directory.
Please help test this version, so we can get ready for the official 1.4.3

Seems like this didn't resolve the issue. It would be great if somebody else could help investigate this issue, maybe I missed something. The folder structure is pretty much the same, with the exception that some symlinks have been replaced by directories with a "mount --bind" over them back to the original symlink target (mostly under /shm/). It shouldn't break anything, but we'll have to test some more to make sure. I fixed all the pieces which I found breaking (like booting & upgrade-config). -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

When I use wget on DL over a secure connection I always have to use option "--no-check-certificate". I think this is because my DL doesn't have any CA certificates in its store. Is there an 'approved' way to get and maintain the standard ca-certificates for DL? The only advice I can find by googling relates to other distros which already have the CA certificates (e.g. at /usr/share/ca-certificates, with symlinks at /etc/ssl/certificates). Dominic |

The only other way I can think of is what I started implementing for DL 1.5. It changes the folder structure a bit and uses "mount --bind" instead of symlinks, which may resolve the need of "wide links". I'm not sure when I'd have time to look at this, but if anybody feels like working it: Look at the GIT repository under the target/Devil-Linux/default directory for the scripts. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

did you try the config file i've send you? with what results? wow :)))))))))))) its working of course I'm curios, how did you find it ? because i wend through the samba documentation of the samba website, it has soooooo many options, and many options are totally un-understandable for me(and i think for many people who try to configure samba the first time) and even with big distro's it isn't working the right way linux mint 10... kubuntu 10.10 livecd sms linux livecd worked well, but get it installed and working with raid1 is a crime :) ubuntu server edition(no livecd) so had to install it on a separate hd as installer not recognized partition type fd with software raid1, and the problem of 100x typing sudo and passwords to get basic things configured as root(no standard root account, very unhandy when you have to setup a server) I'm not a linux first timer, use linux already since 2006 with kde as favorite desktop, but never got this kind of problems, and never setup a server before # # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux. #======================= Global Settings ======================= [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP server string = %h server dns proxy = no log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 syslog = 0 encrypt passwords = true passdb backend = tdbsam obey pam restrictions = yes unix password sync = yes # For Unix password sync to work on a Debian GNU/Linux system, the following # parameters must be set (thanks to Ian Kahan <<ka...@in...> for # sending the correct chat script for the passwd program in Debian Sarge). passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* . pam password change = yes [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no read only = yes create mask = 0700 directory mask = 0700 valid users = %S ;[profiles] ; comment = Users profiles ; path = /home/samba/profiles ; guest ok = no ; browseable = no ; create mask = 0600 ; directory mask = 0700 [printers] comment = All Printers browseable = no path = /var/spool/samba printable = yes guest ok = no read only = yes create mask = 0700 [print$] comment = Printer Drivers path = /var/lib/samba/printers browseable = yes read only = yes guest ok = no the above is on linux mint v10.....and don't works nearly the same in kubuntu as you see ...i tried many things.... if i get the basic running, then i can add specific configurations to fine tune the setup. but if the basic is not even running on many distro's, what is programmed by the real pro guru's, what can i do then.... :) by the way, i reported a shutdown bug at sourceforce if you run as root shutdown now -t secs:10 then you get a message for maintenance(type root password) or type control d to continue which neither work I thank you very very much with helping me to get this working some info about me, maybe nice to know for you I'm living in Saigon, (now hochiminh) vietnam I've a small coffee farm near dallat city (400km from saigon) as you can imagine to earn something from farming coffee alone is very hard as you only get 1 harvest / year that's why i have another tiny company in saigon (maintenance and sales of medical equipment and laboratory analyzers) and i produce plastic bags for fashion shops, nice, good quality, beautiful bags, 100% customised, small batches only So now not think i'm rich...because i can even not buy a second hand car from all this work as inflation is very high here (febuary 2011, until now, 32% inflation) But i enjoy my very busy life...days are tooo short :) if you enjoy coffee...let me know what type you like (vienamese coffee is strong, maybe you have to dillute it) we have 30..50 differend tastes of coffee here and it will be a pleasure for me to send some for you best regards Gudy On 5/10/11, Dominic Raferd <dl...@ed...> wrote: > Gudy: > > To get samba working with DL 1.4.1 and higher I think you must add the > following in /etc/samba/smb.conf: > > in [global] add: > > unix extensions = no > > add a new share: > > [IPC$] > path = /shm/var/tmp > wide links = yes > > and for each other share include the line: > > wide links = yes > > I have now updated http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/dlsetup to reflect > this. > > Dominic > > On 09/05/2011 14:14, gudy wrote: >> I like to request some help with configuring samba on dl 1.4.2 i686 >> server. >> as i followed all the instructions on >> http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/dlsetup >> except workgroup=WORKGROUP >> but i can't get access to the dl samba server from winxp pc's >> dl samba server shows up in workgroup, but access not allowed, ask your >> admin.... >> has anyone dl running with samba?
