Hi I successfully compiled the whole DL based on the lfsystem32 and version 1.6.0-RC1. I am impressed how well this works and my PC seems to be happy with the iso file I got. Thank you guys for this tremendous effort you did over the years of the DL existence! My primary intention is to compile DL for a rather minimalistic hardware box and hence I have to tune some of the kernel parameters. I now struggle to recompile the kernel with changed parameters: changing the config_linux.486 in build/scripts/config/linux-3.x seems not to do the job as the new kernel still has the same original parameters when I check in build/tmp/linux-3.x/.config. Where and at which point in the make-process can I alter the kernel parameters? To force the kernel recompile I removed the linux files in build/tmp/FLAGS/ as I assume this replaces the earlier build/tmp/.done_xxx files as indicated in the 1.4.x documentation. I don't find a more up-to-date documentation than the 1.4.x version and searching the mailing list archive did not reveal the needed information. But honestly, I am not sure if this is the right approach to force the recompile of one component (in my case the kernel). Any help is highly appreciated. Hello DL Community! Before I talk about the new testing release, I have a request: As many of you are probably aware, Devil-Linux is entirely financed out of my own pocket. Many of you save a great deal of money by using free software like DL. I just spent a good chunk of money to update my build and test environment for DL and was hoping to get your monetary support. If everybody donates just a few dollars, it would help me a lot! Donating is easy: just go to http://www.devil-linux.org/sitetools/donatedl.php and use Paypal. Thank you for your support! Now that I'm done whining about money, here are the good news and more requests for your help: I just uploaded a new testing version of the new 1.6 release. It's not a final release candidate yet, but we're getting very close! I'm kindly requesting your help in more testing and fixing the last remaining issues. All known issues are documented in Mantis (like getting grub working for install-on-usb). You can download the testing version here (or tomorrow on the mirrors): ftp://ftp.devil-linux.org/pub/devel/testing/ Please report any new bugs or submit patches here: http://www.devil-linux.org/support/bugs.php -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

Has anyone had experience setting up a GPS device to sync with ntpd on Devil Linux? I don't think LinuxPPS is compiled into DL, is it? I was going to try to use gpsd, but it looks like it has a lot of dependencies. -- Thanks, Brad Landis |

This means that the port should work. Maybe you're really just missing the device in /dev, not sure why udev is not creating it. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org > -----Original Message----- > From: Bradlee Landis [mailto:bra...@gm...] > Sent: Monday, November 07, 2011 5:15 PM > To: dev...@li... > Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Parallel Port Device > > I do have that directory: > > # ll /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/ > total 0 > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 autoprobe > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 autoprobe0 > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 autoprobe1 > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 autoprobe2 > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 autoprobe3 > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 base-addr dr-xr-xr-x 0 root root 0 Nov 7 > 17:14 devices > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 dma > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 irq > -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 modes > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 7 17:14 spintime > > > On Mon, Nov 7, 2011 at 5:00 PM, Heiko Zuerker <he...@zu...> wrote: > > Do you have this directory? > > /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/ > > > > The parportX devices are listed under etc/udev/rules.d/25-lfs.rules in DL. > > > > -- > > > > Regards > > Heiko Zuerker > > http://www.devil-linux.org > > > > > >> -----Original Message----- > >> From: Bradlee Landis [mailto:bra...@gm...] > >> Sent: Monday, November 07, 2011 2:49 PM > >> To: dev...@li... > >> Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Parallel Port Device > >> > >> This was in dmesg: > >> parport_pc 00:08: reported by Plug and Play ACPI > >> parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7, dma 3 > >> [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,EPP,ECP,DMA] > >> > >> > >> Actually, I guess I can just use /dev/port, and create a program that > >> uses > >> 0x378 on /dev/port to get to the parallel port. This was in dmesg: parport_pc 00:08: reported by Plug and Play ACPI parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7, dma 3 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,EPP,ECP,DMA] Actually, I guess I can just use /dev/port, and create a program that uses 0x378 on /dev/port to get to the parallel port. I think that was working using lcdlinux in DL 1.2.15, so I can create my own program to access it myself. If this helps any, I noticed in Redhat that they have a file /etc/udev/makedev.d/50-udev.nodes that creates parport0-4. It would be nice to have working, but I guess not a lot of people need it. Well, that creates a device, but when I try to write to it, it just hangs. I think /dev/lp* requires /dev/parport*. I tried creating it using `mknod /dev/parport0 c 99 0 -m 660`, but it says "No such address or device" when I write to it. Users who have had this problem are finding that the ppdev module is required, but it's not installed on Devil Linux. On Wed, Nov 2, 2011 at 5:59 PM, Chris Grove <dl...@ki...> wrote: > Hi. Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in replying, been a bit busy. Ok, I've updated 2 of my
servers to 1.4.3-2011-10-12 and then followed the instructions below but
it's still not working.
On one server I'm getting:
Starting NFS nfsd...rpc.nfsd: writing fd to kernel failed: errno 111
(Connection refused)
rpc.nfsd: unable to set any sockets for nfsd
and
Exporting NFS Filesystems...exportfs: /etc/exports [1]: Neither
'subtree_check' or 'no_subtree_check' specified for export "*:/home/Films".
Assuming default behaviour ('no_subtree_check').
NOTE: this default has changed since nfs-utils version 1.0.x
and on the other server I get no errors starting the services, but I get
this error:
clnt_create: RPC: Port mapper failure - Unable to receive: errno 111
(Connection refused)
when doing the showmount -e 127.0.0.1 command.
Thanks for all the help so far, here's hoping we can get to the bottom of
the issue.
Cheers, Chris.

Hi. It's usually called /dev/lp0 but I've found that my server doesn't create it for some reason. That said, if you use mknod /dev/lpt0 c 6 0 that then allows you to use it. Hope that helps, Chris. I am seeing a parallel port being detected in the boot logs: Nov 2 15:50:31 src@localhost kernel: : parport_pc 00:08: reported by Plug and Play ACPI Nov 2 15:50:31 src@localhost kernel: : parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7, dma 3 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,EPP,ECP,DMA] But, I don't see any devices in /dev that are the parallel ports. Do you know what I need to do to be able to see parallel port devices? Or are they under a different name? I saw in udev configuration that it can be /dev/lp[0-9], parport[0-9], or irlpt[0-9]. -- Thanks, Brad Landis |

Hi Chris, It looks like portmap is not working. We replaced it with rpcbind, so most probably you use "broken" build. Try the new one - it should be fine. Serge PS. I thought that portmap was instead of rpcbind? I'll download a copy and give it a try.
