I'm not sure how much I need to run, so I don't know if that will be a problem. We just changed from Verizon to Comcast for internet service, and ComCast gave us an SMC "business IP gateway" which contains a firewall. I spent a while trying to figure out how to enable port forwarding for my VPN, and finally called ComCast. You can't! They recommended I disable the firewall in the SMC and put one in that can do port forwarding. I said "but ... that's stupid!"; the tech said "I agree with you, sir." So, this "firewall" keeps anything from getting in or out (other than http, I guess). Turn it off and my local network is completely exposed. I guess I just need to block packets I don't specify for fowarding? Is 32 MB RAM adequate for this? -- Don Stauffer, Office Manager Indiana Epilepsy and Child Neurology, Inc. |

I need a firewall, and I have an old 486 with 32 MB RAM (fully loaded). It doesn't support USB. I like the idea of "no moving parts" for reliability, and I've had good luck with IDE flash drives using other OSes. You can boot off them, etc. - they appear to be an ordinary IDE drive. It seems like I could set Devil Linux up to boot from an IDE flash drive and also store the configuration file there (I'm not sure whether you can make a flash drive read-only; I hope so). Does this sound reasonable? Thanks! -- Don Stauffer, Office Manager Indiana Epilepsy and Child Neurology, Inc. |

I'm looking for a distribution at the moment that can serve me for a router that I'm building. But because of the needs that I have (IPv6 state support) I need one with a recent 2.6 kernel. So far I haven't been very lucky until I thought that I found it with the Devil-Linux project. I created a config and started building, hoping that it would end in a usable iso image. But the build fails somewhere when it tries to build SysLinux. This simply does not compile properly. The compile of syslinux ends with the following error: gcc -m32 -fno-stack-protector -mregparm=3 -DREGPARM=3 -W -Wall -march=i386 -Os -fomit-frame-pointer -I../libutil/include -I../include -D__COM32__ -c -o mboot.o mboot.c mboot.c: In function 'trampoline_start': mboot.c:870: error: can't find a register in class 'BREG' while reloading 'asm' make[2]: *** [mboot.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/syslinux-3.51/com32/modules' make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/syslinux-3.51/com32' make: *** [installer] Error 2 I really don't know what this error is but as far as I can find it has something to do with some stack protection patches or something. Could anyone help me out? Greetings, Jan Hugo Prins |

Hi all,
I've got a hard-time trying to boot on a raid1 device /dev/md0 composed
of /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdc1
I used install-on-usb with /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc for the
disk and /dev/md/0 as the boot partition but I have several problems :
* grub installed but try to boot on hd(0,-1) instead of hd(0,0) or hd(1,0)
* my md0 device seems in bad state when i send cat /proc/mdstat :
md0 : inactive ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/part1[1]
0 blocks
* It seems /dev/hda1 get inaccessible as it is listed in mount list as
mounted on /shm/var/adm/boot/ but is not in reality!
It is completly impossible to mount it anywhere ...
I guessed there's a problem with the init script as bootcd.iso is on it
...
and it looks like the init script doesn't release it.
I can't access it even to fix the grub config file.
Guess DL doesn't support booting on raid devices :(
but i think grub can handle booting on raid devices for a long time,
what's up?
Regards,
MaNU

The phone company will install ADSL in our house, in a week or two. I did a test install of v.1.2.10 (I now have v.1.2.11 and I am waiting for a newer version of DL). I saw the ADSL Service and I checked that box. On my Desktop, I'm running CentOS 4.4 (RHEL 4.4). In their Internet Configuration Wizard, for xDSL connections, they ask for the User Name and Password for the ISP. Questions: (a) How do I configure the User Name and Password in DL? (b) is there more documentation for DL available than what is on the CD? TIA, Lanny in Colombia |

In case this is kept in an accessible archive that can help someone else in= the same situation, this is what I learned. At least with the Comcast ser= vice in MA, you need to have some IP information in the config before dhcpc= d will send DHCP_REQUEST, otherwise it will be looking for a response with = DHCP_DISCOVER that the server isn't going to give it. I took the IP from m= y Windows laptop, which connected with no trouble, and used setup to disabl= e DHCP in the NET config portion, and gave it the IP and netmask. After it= connected, I went back in the enabled DHCP again, rebooted, and it connect= ed fine. =20 =20 My DNS problems were really an incompatible switchbox that wasn't allowing = the clients to get a useful signal from the router. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail to go? Had to replace my configuration file, and I can't for the life of me recall= how to set dhcpcd to do the broadcast DHCP_REQUEST rather than the DHCP_DI= SCOVER. I've Googled long and hard to no avail. Setup seems to create a c= onfiguration that sends DISCOVER by default. My new ISP, Comcast, doesn't = respond to DISCOVER, but prior to my old floppy disk dying, it was respondi= ng to REQUEST. My old configuration was sending REQUEST first, and if fail= ing then sending DISCOVER, so I must have been able to set it years ago whe= n I first set up my router. =20 Are there any known problems with the default Devil Linux config and Comcas= t? I just moved, expecting that I'd be able to plug in my router box to th= e new modem and be up and running. Clients on the router though were no lo= nger getting DNS. I was going to try running NAMED service, but then my fl= oppy disk died. _________________________________________________________________ With Windows Live Hotmail, you can personalize your inbox with your favorit= e color. www.windowslive-hotmail.com/learnmore/personalize.html?locale=3Den-us&ocid= =3DTXT_TAGLM_HMWL_reten_addcolor_0607= |

Hello, With my test I can say that the bug with freeradius is corrected. Thanks a lot... However I noticed one bug with openssh 4.6p1 http://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3D1306 And also one with ntp 4.2.4 https://lists.ntp.isc.org/pipermail/bugs/2007-February/005433.html I do not know if these bugs will be corrected in their next release. Both are not blocking for me but they fill my syslog servers... Thanks a lot for all your work. Nouveau: le premier abonnement ADSL sans taxe mensuelle! Yes, something like that. I have a screen reader that runs here on my win xp box, so, I just install vmware player, server, or, what ever and install what I want to. Most of the time with the different linux distros I can get a kernel with speach built into it, but, beeing that devil-linux is mainly for firewalling, I am not guessing that the speakup package is not included. If I have to go without speach in the kernel, I will have to use another means to install, such as headless. Thanks for getting back. Jeremy |

Hey, did I understand this right, you're blind and use a speech processor to set up Devil-Linux? This is extremely impressive ! Kudos ! Yes, I do have both. What I want to do is to install devil-linux in vmware and use secure crt to connect to it from the host. I will be using a virtual serial and would much rather go without, but, I can't see, so, will have to resort to headless so I can have speech. I just had to make sure that a headless install could be done. I was not able to find that much info on it, so figured I would ask here.
