Hello, first of all: I like the idea of donations very much. People CAN pay but they aren't forced to. (Paypal would be fine since it's easy to use and fast. A server in a 1U-design for example doesn't cost more than 600 ?uros) Before we think about changeing the license we have to think about one important question: who owns the devil-linux code. A lot of people have contributed code to the devil-linux community. If we change the license and charge any fees we'll have to ask everyone for his permission, right ? I remember that sourceforge did the same when they changed the license. We have to make sure that devillinux will be available for free to every private user. The idea of a enterprise-license for companies is not bad. What about additional alternative models of makeing money: selling support, selling the development of specific modules and consulting and so... If you have a look at Mnogosearch, a free search-engine, (http://www.stammwitz.de/mirrors/udmsearch/) you'll see that they are offering the software for free, BUT: - the windows version consts money - the user can pay for an installation-service of the software on his machine - it might be possible to sell this product as an ASP which runs on the sellers machine and indexes a customers website. We can also append the following to the license: when people earn money with Devil-Linux (any type of services), they have to donate 10%. -- cu Heiko http://www.devil-linux.org |

The big problem for free projects, who will pay the bill for server, internet connection, ..... will donations help or do we need to get commercial? -- MfG / Regards Friedrich Lobenstock |

The only way with going commercial, would be to provide services around Devil-Linux. But for me, I don't have that much time to do it. The only "easy" services I see currently see, are the ones I wrote before (selling CDs, providing initial and good firewall rules). On the otherhand, I don't wanna really do it. -- cu Heiko http://www.devil-linux.org |

The code itself should stay under the GPL. When we decide otherway in the future, we can change this whenever we want. But as I tried to explain, that's absolutely not my goal. -- cu Heiko http://www.devil-linux.org |
