This email is to inform you about the release of version '3.1.3' of 'GNU awk' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/gnuawk/ The changes in this release are as follows: POSIX is followed in handling of local numeric formats for input, output, and number/string conversions. Multibyte detection has been improved. Handling of 'close' was made more POSIX-compliant for POSIXLY_CORRECT. Automake was updated to 1.7.5. configure.in was renamed to configure.ac. C-style switch statements are available, but must be enabled at compile time via 'configure --enable-switch'. %c always prints no more than one character whatever precision is provided. strtonum(<number>) now works again. gettext was updated to 0.12.1. Historical practice and POSIX is followed for the return value of 'rand': it's now 0 <= N < 1. Project description: The awk utility interprets a special-purpose programming language that makes it possible to handle simple data-reformatting jobs with just a few lines of code. If you would like to cancel subscription to releases of this project, login to freshmeat.net and choose 'home' from the personal menubar at the top of the page. You'll be presented with a list of projects you're subscribed to in the right column, which you may cancel by highlighting the project in question and clicking the 'delete' button. After making a new ISO image, and booting immediately in VMware, I get a ton of warnings from tar that files are dated in the future. I have my timezone set correctly on my local machine, AND in my LFS, AND in the DL config. (and all have the same time set on the PC, since they are all running on the same PC :) I'm _guessing_ this is because the DL boot process sets the timezone AFTER it untars everything. Would it be a good idea to set the timezone sooner during the boot? It's no big deal, but would make it easier to watch for error messages during the boot if there weren't tons of warnings about future dated files. It would be hard to set the timezone correctly before untar'ing /etc and finding out what the timezone should be set to. Maybe we should set it to the largest value available at the start of the boot script, and let the normal boot process continue to set the time zone correctly, exactly in the same place where it sets timezone now? - BS |

This is added to Gentoo and OpenBSD now for buffer overflow protection. =============================================== What's the stack-smashing protector? It is a GCC (Gnu Compiler Collection) extension for protecting applications from stack-smashing attacks. Applications written in C will be protected by the method that automatically inserts protection code into an application at compilation time. The protection is realized by buffer overflow detection and the variable reordering feature to avoid the corruption of pointers. The basic idea of buffer overflow detection comes from StackGuard system. http://www.trl.ibm.com/projects/security/ssp/ =============================================== ===== CXN, Inc. That would defeat the purpose of having it in RAM. I assume that these optional packages are loaded into RAM (instead of running direct from CD) because they want to run fast. If I start removing their libraries from memory, then they will need to fire up the CD for their library access. The way it currently works, it will use the RAM library if it's present, otherwise it will use the library on CD. - BS |

I've been working on a REALLY STRANGE _intermittent_ problem. Sometimes the setup script will totally flake out. "for" loops push ENTER keys into the keyboard stack. It's like I have a sticky keyboard, but I don't!!! Tracing the script shows it's happening in the middle of long for loops, not when I'm touching the keyboard. Once the machine is booted (VMware), it either happens never happens (consistently), or it happens randomly. REBOOT and the results may change. I _think_ it is memory related. The more optional packages I load during boot, the more likely it is to happen. The more memory I give to VMware, the less likely it is to happen. It happens very frequently at 64MB & 96MB. Sometimes at 128MB. Only happened once at 256MB. This is REALLY WEIRD. The trace shows it has nothing to do with the "dialog" program, it's in a standard "for" loop with "cut" & "sed" commands. Has anything changed in the kernel or major libraries that could cause this? I originally thought it has something to do with my adding gnugk, so I got rid of gnugk and ran a mrproper/build/install last night. No diff. I'll try and dig up a real PC to see if I can make it happen there ... This is driving me nuts!!! - BS |
