[Ddclient-support] version mismatch in ddclient 3.7.3 on Debian

I am experiencing a strange error as of today when I updated from version
3.7.0 to version 3.7.3.

The cache file repeatedly reports version 3.7.0 even when I delete the
cache file.
I get a 'program version mismatch' warning and the cache file is ignored. 
ddclient keeps updating dyndns.org to the point I get blocked due to policy
violation.

I was scanning my entire file system because I thought I might have an old
version lingering around but that seems not the case.

Any suggestion how I can debug this without hitting dyndns.org and
violating the update policy?
