I had SSL enabled but my system doesn't have the module. To answer other questions,
I had downloaded ddclient directly and not used the package. Possibly if I had
used the package, Perl's SSL module would have been installed as well? Running
it as -daemon 0 was what revealed the error message. I believe an error message
should have been visible, even though I was running it with -daemon 300.
