There wasn't exactly an outrush of answers to this question, but eventually
I did find a way to make this work.  It does require a patch to ddclient, which
I got from this forum itself - John Hanely posted it in December 2008:

Cutting and pasting the patch from the forum wasn't particularly successful,
as it lost all the whitespace formatting, but I recreated it (against the current
3.8.0) and submitted it as SourceForge feature request ID 2832129:

- with luck this may get incorporated into the mainstream, if not at least the
next person who needs this can apply the patch more easily by downloading the
attachment from the feature request.
