OS: openSUSE 10.2
ddclient: version 3.7.1

Obviously I did something right when installing ddclient, because when I startup
the computer and ask for:
/etc/init.d/ddclient status
the reply is: ddclient (pid 2430) is running.

When I type: /etc/init.d/ddclient stop
I get: Shutting down ddclient: ddclient is not running

Then I type: /etc/init.d/ddclient start
and I get: Starting ddclient

Next: /etc/init.d/ddclient status
reply: ddclient is stopped

Same result after su.

I restart the computer
/etc/init.d/ddclient status
reply: ddclient (pid 2438) is running

So I can start ddclient at boot-up, stop it in terminal, but not restart it.

What could be wrong?

It's pretty hard to give support to the init-scripts since they change for every
distribution and even differs per version.  I would suggest you to install the
default ddclient package and eventually replace the ddclient program with a
more recent version.

Thanks for your help, Wimpunk. 

I wanted to install the default ddclient package, but where is it? I couldn't
find it any where. Maybe it's because I'm new to Linux, SuSE and ddclient? Any
help would be welcome here.

I ended up installing ddclient for Trustix and the download a recent 
version from sourceforge and copied the binary to /usr/sbin (the result 
of  # which ddclient) :-)

The init script in the SF version for RedHat didn't work for Trustix.

I hope nobody starts looking for ddclient on the openSUSE 10.2 installation
disk, because it isn't there (yet), despite what you might think reading info
on the Novell website.

For openSUSE 10.2 you need this version: ddclient-3.7.0. It may be downloaded
from the sourceforge.net webpage.

Get the tar file, forget about the rpm file you can find on the internet. I
tried to install the rpm file online using the Zen-installer and got congratulated
with a message saying installation had been succesful but in fact nothing had
happened.

Follow the README instructions in the ddclient-3.7.0 folder.

One line in the README file says: For those using Redhat style rc files (...).
I assumed that this was what I needed and followed the instructions, but on
SuSE the given path didn't work. I used the following path:
cp sample-etc_init.d_ddclient /etc/init.d/ddclient

ddclient is running now and I hope it'll stay up.

First, stop changing the subject of the messages, it's pretty annoying to follow
up.
I've been trying it on suse 10.1 using apt4rpm and I could it install it running
`apt-get install ddclient`. It works pretty fine. I could even install it using
`yast2 sw_single`.  But it is possible it isn't provided for opensuse 10.2
anymore.

Anyway, thanks for notifying about the missing package.
