Here is ddclient.conf daemon=60 # check every 300 seconds syslog=yes # log update msgs to syslog mail=root # mail all msgs to root mail-failure=root # mail failed update msgs to root pid=/var/run/ddclient.pid # record PID in file. use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.com/, web-skip='IP Address' login=aaa # default login to dyndns.org password=bbb # default password to dyndns.org server=members.dyndns.org protocol=dyndns2 georgievilla.dynalias.net If I do: ddclient -daemon=0 -verbose -debug -noquiet I get (as an example) WARNING: Skipping update of georgievilla.dynalias.net from 41.245.88.167 to 41.245.64.101 WARNING: last updated Fri Nov 7 09:42:03 2008 but last attempt on Wed Nov 12 18:01:25 2008 failed Warning: Wait at least 5 minutes between update attempts (I waited about 30 minutes actually) The frustrating part of this is the above configuration worked perfectly for several days and then abruptly stopped. I have since reset the router, re-edited ddclient.conf a number of times and restarted both ddclient and the entire BSD box a number of times as well. I can access my website by browsing http://<my website IP address> so I am convinced that the problem does not lie with Apache or the router hardware, for example, but rather with ddclient itself. I am unable to update the IP directly from the router ddclient - daemon=0 -verbose -debug -noquiet reports: DEBUG: get_ip: using linksys, http://192.168.0.1:80/Status.htm reports <undefined> WARNING: unable to determine IP address I would prefer to update from the web but I tried the router as an alternative. The dyndnscommunity forums have been most helpful up to now and there is a longish thread there detailing this problem, but the latest suggestion from that source is that I have some kind of local problem specific to my setup which is beyond that forum's ability to assist with. I would appreciate any assistance with this problem. It looks at least like ddclient can't find the wan ip on the status page of your router. Are you sure your config concerning your linksys router is correct? You could try a wget http://192.168.0.1/Status.htm and post the result on pastebin. Concerning the "wait at least 5 minutes" I would guess either your system clock is running wild or there's another ddclient process running. Ddclient uses the system clock and it's cache file to find out when it tried for the last time. You really should try to use it correctly, it makes your messages easier to read and makes it handier for me to find your problem. You can even use the tool from http://pastebin.ca/download/paste2pastebin.pl to paste the result to pastebin. If http://ddclient.pastebin.ca doens't work for you, you could try http://ddclient.pastebin.com. First you should try to find out if there's another ddclient running. There are different ways to check it, you could try `ps ax | grep ddclient` as root. Either another running process or a clock going wild could explain your skip problem. Second, you were writing about your linksys in the previous post. Now you're using use=web as configuration. Which one is the correct one. Once again, please post your configuration on some kind of pastebin and post link here. It's the easiest way to solve problems. Third, you have some wrong stuff in your cache file. If you're really sure you don't have any other ddclient process running, remove your cache file and restart ddclient in verbose mode. If I do ps ax | grep ddclient, I get: 1094 v0 S 0:02:92 ddclient - sleeping for 360 seconds (perl15.8.8) 10643 v0 R+ 0:00:00 grep ddclient I interpret this (rightly, I hope), as confirming only 1 instance of ddclient is running? Could you please elaborate on the aspect of the system clock "going wild"? I have no idea what to look for to verify this. As you will see from ddclient.conf, I have been using the "web" option from the outset. I did attempt once to update from the Linksys router with no success and then reverted to the "use=web" option. If I have wrong stuff in the cache file, I have no idea how it got there! I created the file by doing: touch ddclient-cache and left it at that. I have now deleted ddclient.cache and restarted the server completely and the output of ddclient -daemon=0 -verbose -debug -noquiet is identical to what I posted to the pastebin a few minutes ago. One detail: the first time I run the ddclient diagnostic after a system restart I get a "bad authentication" error. If I run it again I get the output I posted. Not sure whether that has any bearing on this problem? Either kill the ddclient process or stop it with something like /etc/init.d/ddclient stop. As a second step we clean up your configuration. I took a look at your configuration on http://ddclient.pastebin.com/m1866c866 and took the configuration out of it on http://ddclient.pastebin.com/d2d27d05b On http://ddclient.pastebin.com/m208a514b I cleaned up your configuration. All unneeded stuff is removed. I'm almost sure your login is wrong. Your login on dyndns normally isn't an email address but a username. After changing this stuff, remove your cache file (normally in /var/cache/ddclient/ddclient.cache) and create a new post with the result of `ddclient -daemon=0 -verbose -debug -noquiet `. Don't forget to put a link to your post here. Btw, you could better remove your password when posting on pastebin. The site still does not respond though. although browsing the IP address still works. I will try a complete server restart and post again... <After server restart> Diagnostic output is identical to that posted above. The site still does not respond. There evidently WAS a password problem although I don't understand why. The original username I was using was in a mail address format which is what I have to use to log into www.dyndns.org and that is what I was told to use on the dnydnscommunity forum. So the diagnostic seems to report success but the site is still not available. FYI: I am running Firefox with the "External IP" add-on from ermodev.se. As I type this, ddclient reports an external IP of 41.245.110.221 The firefox plugin reports an external IP of 196.25.255.246 My router reports 41.245.11.221 when I login to it directly. Last point... My linksys router (WAG200G) has a setup tab 'DDNS' which is currently set to 'disabled' If I select 'enable', it provides me with a'dyndns.org' option. The menu it presents gives me 'username' 'Password' 'Hostname' options and also reports an IP of 41.245.110.221 Should this option be enabled within my router? After all of this, if I do http://41.245.110.221 I get my homepage. Don't know if this is relevant but it may help? In my limited understanding of DDNS and ddclient it appeared to me that the reason I can't find my page using it's URL HAD to be because ddclient wasn't working. Some routers have problems if you try to access an internal server using the WAN-IP. I hope this is not causing your problems. If you can access your site using the IP and if your site isn't accessible using the hostname there must be a problem with the configuration of your webserver, unless your own dns isn't working correctly. If you're running linux, you could try something like `host georgievilla.dynalias.net` to verify if your local dns got the update. At last, you could verify if there isn't any proxy or firewall rule blocking your request. That means that server, router & client PC went down Now I have the same problem that I cannot use the URL to access the website. I can use the IP address though. The router and ddclient both report the same IP but I get a 'Network Timeout' when I try to access the URL. ddclient reports the same external IP that the router does. I then experienced a power failure earlier today and the server is once again unavailable through it's URL but available via its IP address. Here is a post from the Dyndns community forum which I don't fully understand but which may point to the root of the problem: "If it's any help, I can confirm that Telkom ZA do use transparent proxies and it's always the proxy IP that's reported to the webserver, not the customer's. (Though that may be buried in an "X-Forwarded-For' or somesuch header, I've never looked). What's more, viewing my Apache server logs when a Telkom customer visits I see pretty well every single (sub-) request coming from a different 'client' IP. Ie., requests get routed through the various proxies at random. First time I saw that behaviour I thought it was a sophisticated DOS attack or somesuch! So the default IP displayed by the DynDNS config page will always be wrong (unless it does something clever with the request headers). Can't help with a workaround I'm afraid, the only router I know is Smoothwall, which has DynDNS updating built-in. Other than suggest you get a router with that capability." Being a Telkom ZA user, this applies to me. I do not understand what a transparent proxy is and does this prevent Dyndns and / or ddclient ever working reliably? I did NOT change anything since last good Login If i do 'sudo /etc/init.d/ddclient restart' i get [OK] If i do 'sudo ddclient -daemon=0 -verbose -debug -noquiet' i get (last few lines): "RECEIVE: <html><head><title>Current IP Check</title></head><body>Current IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx</body></html> DEBUG: get_ip: using web, checkip.dyndns.org/ reports xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx SUCCESS: myname.dyndns.org: skipped: IP address was already set to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx." The Ip that appears (i've blanked it with xxx.xxx.) is correct. So in other word, i can access my FTP locally (by using my router IP:Port) I can access my FTP by typing my WAN IP:Port ddclient does update my IP correctly but i CANNOT access with my domain name Any1 can help?
