Patches item #1893144, was opened at 2008-02-13 22:18 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by wimpunk You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=676130&aid=1893144&group_id=116817 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: John Palkovic (drjohnny) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Foreground patch Initial Comment: I am running ddclient as a dyndns.org client on a debian etch system. I had some problems with the startup script in the debian package. It was also out of date with no ssl support. I decided to patch ddclient to run under the control of runit (http://smarden.org/runit), a unix service supervisor akin to svscan (http://cr.yp.to/daemontools/svscan.html). I created the patch and have been running with it for a week with no issues to report. The patch adds a -foreground argument. When called with this argument, ddclient runs as a daemon but does not fork(). This is appropriate for use with runit or svscan (or launchd on a darwin system). There are changes to the daemon logic, so I would appreciate any comments. I will attach the patch with the upload button. -John Palkovic 13 Feb 2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: wimpunk (wimpunk) Date: 2008-02-13 23:00 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=722282 Originator: NO As far as I can see, you don't need a patch, you just need the daemon=0 option. I'm also wondering why you had some startup problems with the debian package. I didn't got any report about that from other people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=676130&aid=1893144&group_id=116817 |

You could try to get you IP from your router, I think that would be the best solution. ______________________________________________________________________ You are receiving this email because you elected to monitor this forum. Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4775055 By: akujbida Hello, ddclient reports that my IP has changed, although my router shows that it has not. use=web, protocol=dyndns2, tried web=www.checkip.org as well as the defaults dyndns and dnspark. I've viewed the debug output as well as pointed my browser to the lookup pages and can see clearly that these IP-checking webpages are misreporting my IP, so I suspect ddclient is not at fault, just hoping someone here has seen this before. The IP flips as frequently as every 5 seconds between the real IP (as displayed on my router's status page) and some other IP, ususually the same one. Below is some typical results, with web=www.checkip.org on the command line. Notice that dyndns report flips while checkip.org does not (although this is just luck: checkip.org also misreports, telling me 127.0.0.1 from time to time). My ISP is tenchically unskilled (Emirates Internet) and not very polite, so no chance for help there. They do run a transparent proxy, last I heard. I can't see how to obtain the IP from my router's status page, which I believe would evade the problem. Any guidance? Other threads (I can't find one)? Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: wimpunk (wimpunk) Assigned to: wimpunk (wimpunk) Summary: Preventing ddclient sending mail when stopped Initial Comment: There's been a quiet anoying feature running ddclient. When ddclient receives a TERM it's been sending out mail while TERM is a pretty normal signal when halting a system. This patch makes ddclient halting normaal when receiving the TERM signal. After applying this patch it handles three signals: * HUP: restart * TERM: terminate without sending email * KILL: terminate WITH sending email. Any comments are welcome. This patch has been applied to the subversion repository on r82 and will normally be include in the next release. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=676130&aid=1889514&group_id=116817 |

For instance: on IP address change, call user_script with arguments new_ip old_ip. What do you think? Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4766297 By: wimpunk I'm afraid ddclient would need to much changes to work with XML-RPC. If XML-RPC would become more common, maybe I'll invest some time in writing a rpc based version of ddclient but it will not get integerated in the current version. ______________________________________________________________________ You are receiving this email because you elected to monitor this forum. Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4765751 By: stfindeisen I was looking for reliable and cheap dynamic DNS service allowing your own domain names, and came across this: http://www.xname.org/ . They say it is free. They already seem to support some dynamic DNS updates (http://www.xname.org/dynamic-update.php?language=en) with XML-RPC (a script: http://www.xname.org/xnameArec.py --- there are more). Perhaps you could integrate such script into ddclient? What do you think? I suggested them to publish some official API specification. Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4759915 By: bandrewfox This "bug" still exists in the README. I had this same problem with the process not starting. Add: mkdir /var/cache/ddclient Also, you could make a note that the chkconfig command is not necessary for ubuntu installations. And that the proper install location for ubuntu is: cp sample-etc_rc.d_init.d_ddclient /etc/init.d/ddclient Works great otherwise! Thanks. ______________________________________________________________________ You are receiving this email because you elected to monitor this forum. Thanks for doing it. There is just one problem I need to report: You need to update the README file to instruct people to create /var/cache/ddclient if it doesn't exist. Or better yet, have the ddclient to create one itself. I am running it under Ubuntu 7.10, with ddclient-3.7.3 See below for the debug output (through which I discovered the problem): ///////////////////// WARNING: updating xxxxx.dyndns.org: nochg: No update required; unnecessary attempts to change to the current address are considered abusive FATAL: Cannot create file '/var/cache/ddclient/ddclient.cache'. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Remy Blank (remyblank) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Fixes for dnspark.com and SSL Initial Comment: I am using ddclient-3.7.3 on Gentoo with both dyndns.org and dnspark.com. It has two problems with the latter: - Updates using SSL have a different URL than unencrypted ones. According to this page: http://www.dnspark.com/support/developers/updateSpecs.php The update URL is at: https://www.dnspark.net/api/dynamic/update.php and the "myip=" parameter seems to have been renamed to "ip=". - When a host is already set to the correct IP address, an initial run of ddclient gets a "nochange" status code, which is interpreted by ddclient as a failure, therefore the cache file is not updated, and the change is re-tried after 5 minutes. The "nochange" status code should rather be interpreted as a success, and the cache should be updated. I attached a patch for ddclient-3.7.3 that corrects both problems and works fine here on three PCs running Gentoo Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=676128&aid=1860495&group_id=116817 |

Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4676124 By: bwooster47 I am still trying to dig deeper into this, but it looks like ddclient always does a force update when use=ip is used? Is there any way to have it use the cache and not call out to dyndns.org when using the following command line: ddclient -verbose -file ~/ddclient/conf -cache ~/ddclient/cache -pid ~/ddclient/pid -use=ip -ip NEW-IP It also seems that if I intersperse the above command and the same command with -noexec, then it wipes out the cache! That certainly seems like a bug - -noexec should leave the cache untouched, I would presume? The cache also gets an empty ip= word, which leads to a warning on next run. ______________________________________________________________________ You are receiving this email because you elected to monitor this forum. Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4663816 By: amster Hi, I wanted to give a short update. Finally everything is working again. Second problem I had was that my system was referring to a nameserver in resolve.conf which has been "switched off" some weeks ago and as a result was always pointing to the same wrong ip-address. To make a long story short. I changed the nameserver in resolve.conf and now ddclient is able to update again. Thank you for helping me in this case! I learned a lot... ______________________________________________________________________ You are receiving this email because you elected to monitor this forum.
