Writing the script that runs those utilities will require thought, while 
executing the script itself will be as automatic as it can be.

The boost format library IMHO looks nice, I remember a similar design 
(or "named parameters", as the pattern is called) in QString from Qt. 
The only thing printf has going for it is the gettext "support".
