I'd say there are several advantages of being more similar to other 
software, like a web browser:

1, Feedback is important. How will the user know that the program didn't 
ignore the command otherwise?

2. Users are smart. They want to be lazy. And the easiest software to 
use is one that resembles something you already learned.
