Log4j is, correctly, the gold standard for logging libraries. I would consider commons logging to be the worst choice (see http://www.qos.ch/logging/thinkAgain.jsp, http://www.qos.ch/logging/classloader.jsp, and http://tapestryjava.blogspot.com/2007/08/so-long-commons-logging-hello-slf4j.html for a good overview). I have just started using slf4j on top of log4j and it looks amazingly simple to use, and it avoids the classloader issues from commons. I have always looked at commons-logging as a hammer in search of a nail. If you are already using log4j, there is no reason to switch.
