Using Gentoo, I get the following upon startup:

bdash@alpha bdash $ dbmixer
DBMixer ERROR: could not create shared memory for
system data.: No such file or directory
DBMixer: could not detach memory segment.: Invalid argument

Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from (NULL) pointer to
`GtkObject'

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtksignal.c: line 724
(gtk_signal_connect): assertion `object != NULL' failed.

    plugin init.c: failed to init dbaudiolib.
    NON FATAL to xmms, but dbmix plugin will not work...
    xmms continuing... is dbfsd running?
    DBAudio ERROR: DBAudiolib initialization failed.

    This is not a bug, you are most likely not running the sound server.
    Please check the README file for the proper startup procedure.
