You need to set the environment variable KDEDIR to point to the directory where your kde is installed (e.g. /opt/kde or /usr/local/kde). Do it, because other apps might need it as well.

The stable release of Dbdesigner will need the mysql headers to build the mysql plugin. Because the current release does not contain a working mysql plugin, it didn't complain about not finding mysql.h.
That file is contained in the mysql packages you can find at www.mysql.com.

Another question: several MySQL programs needs mysql.h Don't you? Do you know, which source-package does it contain?
