GlobalPreferences -> DBCopy will allow you to set the commit count, which will greatly improve performance. I will look into the batching approach you suggested to see how practical it is.
Also, this project has been migrated in SQuirreL SQL Client source code base,
The latest version there (https://sourceforge.net/projects/squirrel-sql/) probably has a few changes not present in the latest release of this project here. Ideally, in the future, features and bug reports should be filed there. No need to do that this time, however.
