WHY IS IT TAKING FOREVER
dban is going insanely slow and I did as much searching and reading and can't come up with a reason why it’s going so slow. 2tb 1 pass wipe says 8 hours. A 3 pass standard says 103 hours and keeps creeping higher the longer it goes. Everything I find online and here all suggest that it should take an hour or up to 3 for a single pass. I found a thread about this issue but it was from 2010 and did not pertain to what’s happening.
TLDR:
133,817KB/s throughput and a Load Averages: 2.9 2.78 2.86 as of 10% into the 8 hours blanking 1 pass
2tb 5400 drive
Happens the same regardless of computer used.
The HDD is connected via an usb3.0 external device
It tests FINE with diskmark32 and i have had NO issues with that external drive bay
Trying to wipe some old but still good low life HDD's
Size 2tb 5400 rpms and to be specific this is on an hd204ui but this issue happens on ALL other drives I have some are 2tb and some are 1tb. They were all used on a old school ready NAS NV+ for about 8 hours 5 days a week for 3 years. I did a few bad sector checks and heath checks all came back healthy with just 1 or 2 errors here and there reported on SMART
I tried this on an old laptop first and thought this was happening because it was just a slow CPU but I tried it on a daily PC I run (i7) and it had the exact same issue. The USB HDD external device I am using is a Liztek HDDS1BS USB 3.0 although the 3.0 means nothing as the laptop does not have that. I have yet to try to connect it internally to my daily PC's sata port. I may try that but I may just say 1 blanking wipe is good enough. Not really anything worth recovering on here other than personal pictures and adult content. I am donating them to a family with a PC I built for them form spare parts and I want to make sure that it’s all clean and good. I can just wait out the 8 hours a pop as its not critical they get done today but I like it when things work properly and I am suspect that the real issue is with the HDD as they are all cheap drives back in the day when I got them for my NAS.
At the time of posting this i noticed that even the single wipe slowly increases its time estimate as it progresses. When i started it said 8 hours, now it says 7:52 at 10%
