What about l10n/i18n?
I think gettext is to complex for such a project, i'd
suggest some kind of simple hash ..
I'd be willing to help (even patch the source)- how to
proceed?

I guess you can (It's GPL, isn't it?)- the developer hasn't
responded to this feature request since mid-'05, so he might
be not that interested in this project anymore.
