#98 Data Crow Could Not Be Started: java.lang.NullPointer Exception

I tried to open Data Crow today and got the following error:

"Data Crow could not be started: java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "org.datacrow.core.modules.DcModule.getObjectName()" because the return value of "org.datacrow.core.modules.DcModules.get(int)" is null".

I just used the program yesterday. I added some more books and Music. I did a backup and closed the program. When I tried to open the program today, I got the error shown above.

I tried upgrading to the latest edition (Ver 4.1.1) today and it still produced the same error.
How can I restore program operation?

Hi!

Out of curiosity, which version did you have installed initially? If I understand correctly you had another version installed first and then you installed 4.11 on top of this, correct?

Would be great if you can add the data_crow.log file, as located in the folder you selected for Data Crow to store it's data to.

Hi Robert,
I believe it was 4.10. I'm not sure though as I deleted all of the files to try to start over.

I was able to fix the issue. I think the cause of the problem was due to one corrupted module file (I tried to create a module that didn't quite work out) and three corrupted jpg files. I did a scandisk and repaired a few disk errors which allowed me to delete the corrupted files.
I reinstalled the latest version and restored my last backup and everything seems to be working well.

It was kind of odd though because I tried to create the module a few months ago and the program was working fine until yesterday. Only yesterday I got the error message.

Are there any other modules available anywhere? I wanted to catalog my athletic shoe collection and a watch collection. I tried to follow the instructions, but it may be a bit over my head.

Hi Joseph,

Great that it is fixed, that is nice. I can understand it's a bit daunting to create new modules; For me its quite easy, if you have a list of fields for both modules, I can create a good base for yourself to use. It's always easier to add to something rather than having to start from the beginning.

Actually quite a good idea to have a small set of optional additional modules...
