First and foremost, have we contacted the core team over at OpenDarwin to see if they would consider our project? We should also verify what services do and don't offer. That said I believe that in the long run, this project would benefit from a collaborative effort between our own developers and those already developing Darwin and hopefully Apple employees developing Mac OS X. I agree with Emmanuel that here at Sourceforge we appear to be a little overshadowed by the masses of other projects. I believe that mac/darwin developers, not necessarily the general public, would have an easier time finding us at OpenDarwin. Gavers, did you find us simply searching the projects at Sourceforge or did you here about us from some of the announcements, i.e. Slashdot, 4OSX, MacBytes, or others? However we must not think too much of ourselves, by thinking we will become the star project at OpenDarwin. This will bring resentment from the developers there and we will find ourselves no better off. While I haven't looked up the differences in the hosting services, I do know that I have been unable to access our site a few times from Sourceforge. Jim, I am not saying OpenDarwin wasn't down, but it is back up now and seems to be functional. Now for the other side. We are currently established here at Sourceforge. This is where our forums, website, and this very mailing list are based. Furthermore, all information thus far has directed users to the Sourceforge site, it's somewhere they are used to coming. If we change hosting services we will have to announce the move ahead of time to inform visitors of our intentions. So in summary I'll leave my vote open while we actually think and debate this. Pros: - Mac Developer Community - Room to develop Cons: - Relocation changes, i.e. site address, list address |
