As of now, today, The Darkbot project is going to start a major redevelopment, with careful changes and modifications being made in order to improve the underlying code and logic, with the general idea of revitalizing the project to fit better with the current needs and interests of IRC bot users, and of making Darkbot an even more enjoyable and useful IRC bot.
There have been complaints and misrepresentations in the so-called "official" support IRC channels for Darkbot and “official” sites for Darkbot.
To be explicitly clear, Darkbot@SourceForge is, and continues to be, the only official source for all matters regarding Darkbot development, including file storage, support, and user inquiries as well as issues.
- http://darkbot.sourceforge.net/ is the home page and the only official home page for the project;
- https://sourceforge.net/projects/darkbot/ is the development page and the only development local for the project;
- There is no current "official" IRC support channel, but we are in the process of setting one up, and will announce its location/address here as soon as it's ready to go.
We recommend who misrepresent this project to take action for stopping doing so, in the basis of Open Source concepts and rules.
If you are an avid Darkbot user / supporter and want to have a Darkbot affiliated IRC channel or site to be listed here, please contact me for suggestions about how those places should be set up.
As soon as the IRC channel has been set up, and testers assigned to it, all Darkbot pre-releases will be put under ongoing stress tests, so that we can release a functional version of Darkbot, stable enough to install on your systems, as soon as possible. Since the current Darkbot codebase is not stable, I urge you to wait until it has been debugged and stress tested before installing Darkbot on your system or server.
While we start with the code cleanup, refactoring, updating, and getting Darkbot working live on IRC for stress testing and debugging, in order to make it available for download and installation as quickly as possible, I hope that C and C++ coders/programmers, as well as testers, will (re)join the project and help make Darbot what it used to, and will hopefully continue, to be: The IRC Talking Robot. A bot that has interacted with thousands of users, and inspired other bots to get even better.
On a personal note, about nine years ago I had to leave the project because of personal reasons. My motivation in coming back it's mostly due to the respect I have to Darkbot's creator Jason Hamilton, the work he did in implementing this useful and fun tool, and the countless users who asks to keep doing what was done before.
This is underway work in phases. Please, be patient and collaborative. Hopefully as the project (re) launches, many different ideas will come up and be developed, to make Darkbot even better than it was before.
