I could not find any API for lzip (did I missed it?)
If lzip is to replace both gzip and bzip2 as it pretends, it should provide not only the same CLI level interface but also the same API level interface (stream interface in particular), for it can be integrated with applications.
If dar had to spawn a shell from which to run bzip2 or gzip program to compress/uncompress data for each file under backup or archiving process, performances would really suffer...

Denis

I know it is too late, but i asked the lzip developer about the lack of an API (https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/lzip-bug/2025-08/msg00000.html)
and he replied (https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/lzip-bug/2025-08/msg00001.html).
Thanks for DAR.

It is never too late, I just missed finding the lzlib library from the page you referred. I copy here the link they redirect us to for further reference. https://www.nongnu.org/lzip/lzlib.html
