So I ran the latest DangerDeep off of the Ubuntu PPA and got this:
$ dangerdeep

I checked out svn head, compiled, and ran through gdb. It turns out that in system.cpp:287, an exception is being thrown that my resolution (1920x1200) is not supported.
throw invalid_argument("invalid resolution requested!");
That's ok, but catch blocks in call_mymain(list<string>& args) in mymain.cpp:47 don't pick it up and it is left to the catch all block. Strangely, when running under GDB and built with debugging symbols, the exception is caught properly and the user informed of why initialization failed:
int call_mymain(list<string>& args)
I'm ok with it not supporting my resolution / aspect ratio, but it would have been helpful if I had known that that was the reason why it couldn't startup.
THis should fix it:
./build/linux/dangerdeep --datadir data
