Somewhat sooner than originally planned, I have created an updated Win32 installer today. It uses the new environment variable names, and there are also a few minor changes. You can download it from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=167991 The new file is 'Csound-5.1.00.0_20060822-win32_i686.exe'. |

I did not originally plan creating new packages until the next release which will probably not be available before October. However, I can replace just the .exe installer with an updated version sooner than the new release. I will not have time for doing so until about the end of August, though. |

I am not sure if having my name in the "official" project name is a good idea: even though at this time it does not look like there are many people who are interested in joining development, if anyone does so in the future, the name will be somewhat misleading. Calling the "canonical" version "ffitch Csound" is disliked by many people for the same reason. But I may still consider your suggestion. I also thought of a name like "Csound++" which is in fact the name of the CVS module where the current development sources are (because the code is written in the C++ language, and it also suggests some kind of "improved Csound"), but it is probably not a good name for the project either. P.S. I will be away from Csound development and this list for a week starting from Wednesday, so I can only answer posts sent during that time on 30th. |

I did already changed the names of environment variables in my sources, although did not commit these changes to CVS yet. Here is a list of the current names (may change until the next release if better ones are found), with the original name in parentheses: CSOUNDRCFILE (CSOUNDRC) CSXMGDIR (CSSTRNGS) CSPLUGINDIR (OPCODEDIR) CSPLUGINDIR64 (OPCODEDIR64) "CSOUNDRCFILE" does look somewhat silly (although it does make it more obvious that it points to a file - newbies do often think that CSOUNDRC should specify a directory name), so I am not sure about that yet, but the others are probably OK. > Can you tell me the differences between the so called «canonical» > version and yours? Well, to be honest, I must admit that this version exists mainly because of personal differences with some of the developers of "canonical" Csound. It does not look like I can return there in the foreseeable future, but I would still like to continue Csound development. So, I am basically continuing my work in a separate project. From an user's point of view, there is no single major new feature yet, although there are already several small ones (see the release notes for more information: http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=440181&group_id=167991), and many bug fixes. Most of the changes done so far are internal code reorganization (like in Csound 5 vs. 4) that requires a lot of work, but does not add user visible new features; this is not completed yet, but the hope is that the sources will become cleaner, and easier to maintain and extend in the future. I do plan to add more new features and opcodes eventually. Staying up to date with the "canonical" version while doing all the above is also important, of course. |
