Hey folks, I tried installing CSCMail with the handy dandy CSCMailInstaller.pl and it ran into some issues. I'm running redhat 7.3 with gtk 1.2, and while the script was finishing up compiling gtk-perl (I believe) it spit this at me: Writing /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux/auto/Gtk/XmHTML/.packlist Appending installation info to /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i386-linux/perllocal.pod Done, firing up the GUI ... Can't locate auto/Gtk/init.al in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at (eval 2) line 1 Sure enough, I don't have an init.al anywhere on my machine. Any ideas about this? Should I install gkt-perl on my own? Thanks, Nate |

Thanks for the tip Gavin. I'll look into that. Thanks for this. I have subsequently upgraded to RedHat 8.0, which comes with an e-mail program. It has really s....l....o....w....e....d my system down though. I'm not sure if installing the RPM will help, since the installer still won't find the directory. But maybe it detects that you have a recent version of URI then and doesn't try to install one by itself. If you think you've got all the stuff that was named as a failed dependency, you can try to install the rpm with the --nodeps flag. This will install it even if dependencies fail. > Thanks for all your help. No Problem. -- Daniel No man is an island, but some of us are long peninsulas. |

Thanks Daniel I think you are right. It seems CSCMail is no longer being developed, and the work redirected to Pronto, so I have shifted to trying to install that. Things went more smoothly, but again I got stuck at the last point! At the very end I get a message along the lines of: Sh: CD/root/prontobuild URI-1.19: no such file or directory I assumed that I needed to install URI 1.19, which I think I found OK as an RPM on the web. But when I try to run the URI RPM I get a message about failed dependencies, and a statement that it needs Perl 5.6. I have the necessary version of Perl on my machine, but the URI RPM doesn't seem to find it. How do I get it to find Perl when I run the rpm command? Thanks for all your help. The versions of the perl-packages it depends on are hardcoded into the installer-script. You'd need to change these to the newest versions, since it seems that CountZero, the CSCMail Maintainer doesn't do it anymore...to be hones, I don't know if development is continuing on CSCMail (How far is the C-Version grown CZ?). I don't know if it downloaded the packages and only unpacking them failed or if it needs the correct version number to download it. You may find the version numbers on CPAN. I can't tell you much more, cause I'm not really into perl. By the way: I suggest you use the CVS Version of CSCMail. Cause 1.6.1 has a Y2K issue and some other things. The easiest way to do that is to install 1.6.1 first, which will install you all the packages it depends on, and then checkout and install CVS. I'm not sure, but if I remember exactly, this is done by a simple "make install" in your local copy of the CVS-Version. -- Daniel "The C Programming Language -- A language which combines the flexibility of assembly language with the power of assembly language." |

Daniel, thanks for this, and you to Gavin. You guys were both right. I was trying to run it outside the GUI. It now runs fine within terminal mode for a while, but towards the end I get the following messages: Sh: CD/root/cscmailbuild/DBD-CSV-0.1027: no such file or directory Sh: CD/root/cscmailbuild/HTMLParser-3.25: no such file or directory Sh: CD/root/cscmailbuild/URI-1.17: no such file or directory Sh: CD/root/cscmailbuild/IO-stringy-1.210: no such file or directory I had assumed CSCMailInstaller would create any directories it needed. Is it that I need to manually create these first, or is it failing to find some files do you think? Thanks again for your help. You usually get the "cannot open display" error when you're not running a GUI, or are running a shell session that doesn't have X forwarding. The best way to check is to see what the $DISPLAY environment variable contains. For example, when I open a terminal and do $ echo $DISPLAY If it's empty, then that's the problem. HTH, Gavin. Are you running the installer as root? If yes, how did you login? I mean: does X run under user root as well? If not this might be the problem: you are not allowed to use another users X-Server, not even if you're root. That is a typo in the Gtk Documentation. It should read: Returns : 0 if the nodes are equal, less than 0 if the first node should come before the second, and greater than 0 if the second come before the first Not: Returns : 0 if the nodes are equal, less than 0 if the first node should come before the second, and greater than 1 if the second come before the first When in doubt, check the code. -Steve ----- Original Message ----- From: "Muhri" <mu...@ya...> To: <cou...@cy...> Cc: <csc...@so...> Sent: Thursday, May 23, 2002 4:22 AM Subject: [CSCMail-Users] re: Billienum bug > > Hi Steve, > > > > I fixed this for Pronto on Sept. 9th when it all > > happened. Yeah, your func below might be a bit nicer but it'll never return a value greater than 2 - btw you dont have to handle sort dir, gtk will pass teh values in the way they are supposed to be sorted - asc or desc. sorry for the very late reply, i changed mail providers at the very same time i sent this email and i just got my email from there ! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ouch! Try: sub my_sort_func { my ($clist, $a, $b) = @_; # Might as well handle sortdir here (not strictly needed) if ($clist->{'sortdir'} eq "descending") { my $tmp = $a; $a = $b; $b = $tmp; } # Are both nodes numeric? if ($a =~ /^\d+$/ and $b =~ /^\d+$/) { return ($a <=> $b); # nope.... } else { return (uc($a) cmp uc($b)); } } CSCMail users: I will be releasing version 1.7.10 in the next few days that addresses this bug as well encorporating quite a few other code cleanups... In fact, the reason I am not releasing it right this second involves these code cleanups... I was in the middle of re-coding the way Folders are handled internally, as well as getting rid of the "no more than 99 normal folders" restriction (this involves folders with id's equal to or greater than 100 being treated as "virtual" search folders... I am adding a new field to the database that handles the type of folder so there will no longer be any arbitrary limits to the number of folders) I guess I should release a 1.6.x version that fixes this bug as well? Is anyone still using 1.6.x? -CZ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Music Experience http://launch.yahoo.com |

You might need to manually run the make / make install steps for gtk-perl, passing it a commandline parameter to tell it that gtk includes are in /opt/gnome/include It also looks like the problem is more specifically with Gtk::XmHTML... do you have the gtkxmhtml library installed? (You don't need it for CSCMail to run, but CSCMail will use it if you have it) -Steve ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Franks" <smu...@am...> To: <csc...@li...> Sent: Monday, February 11, 2002 1:47 AM Subject: Re: [CSCMail-Users] installing CSCMail > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > ok, after further investigation, I have discovered that my problem is because > it cannot find my libraries. Thanks! (it works) I'm not sure, but is this such a complicated thing? I think the problem was that the file contained a space in it, so my viewer tried to open 2 files instead of one and that had to fail. Well with "normal" (eq. not MIME encoded) Attachment filenames both, saving and viewing, works even with spaces in the filename. So my thought is: isn't this a related problem you have yet solved? If yes this new problem could actually be fixed the same way. Or am I wrong? Ok, I have commited a fix that actually works, but I don't like it... hehe The MIME::Parser module that we use to decode MIME messages has a "decode_header" option, that I have now turned on. However, it is evil: (quoting from the manpage) decode_headers [YESNO] Instance method. Controls whether the parser will attempt to decode all the MIME headers (as per RFC-1522) the moment it sees them. This is not advis able for two very important reasons: · It screws up the extraction of information from MIME fields. If you fully decode the headers into bytes, you can inadvertently transform a parseable MIME header like this: Content-type: text/plain; filename="=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Hi=22Ho?=" into unparseable gobbledygook; in this case: Content-type: text/plain; filename="Hi"Ho" · It is information-lossy. An encoded string which contains both Latin-1 and Cyrillic characters will be turned into a binary mishmosh which simply can't be rendered. Evil or not, it does solve this problem... However, it also causes the filename to be "Philippe" instead of "Philippe Amrein.doc" The mime-type is ok, so it will still open in any program that can understand files of type: application/ms-word The MIME::Parser and MIME::Parser::Filer documentation makes it look like this method should be un-needed in the current version, however, without turning this on, the file end's up named "1" which is worse in my mind. Supposedly MIME::Parser::Filer runs the filename through MIME::Words to decode it, once it has encountered the entity, but as we see in the error message, it doesn't seem to understand the "windows-1252" character set (of course, MIME::Words handles it just fine, as that is what I used in the last fix to make the name display correctly in the attachment menu) So, anyway, I will be contacting the MIME::Parser maintainer to see if we can get a "real" fix to this problem. For now, the current CVS will allow you to deal with this encoded header messages internally to CSCMail, without needing to jump through import/export hoops. The filenames might get munged a little, but at least you can get at the data. -CZ ----- Original Message ----- From: Daniel Schregenberger <np...@gm...> To: Count Zero <cou...@cy...> Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2001 5:46 PM Subject: Re: [CSCMail-Users] Attachments > ok, here it is! > > Daniel > > > Count Zero wrote: > > > Please forward the message to me, as a file attachment if you can (ie: > > export the message to a single file and then send that to me as an > > attachment.) > > > > Thanks! > > > > -CZ > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: Daniel Schregenberger <np...@gm...> > > To: Count Zero <cou...@cy...> > > Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2001 3:23 PM > > Subject: Re: [CSCMail-Users] Attachments > > > > > > > Updating was no problem, all the '?' and '=' chars in the attachments name > > have > > > disappeared, but I'm unable to save it (and i'm not sure if viewing really > > > works, i think it should show more than just a few lines, but this could > > be due > > > to the fact i'm using antiword (a console program) to view M$-word > > documents.) > > > I dont think it is the space in the filename, because other attachments > > with > > > spaces in their names can be saved. > > > unfortunately i havent found a second MIME-encoded message, so I'm not > > able to > > > say if its special with this file. > > > I can forward you that mail if you want to. > > > > > > Daniel > > > > > > > > > Count Zero wrote: > > > > > > > Ok, these are MIME encoded filenames...
