Maybe there could be a way to farm, something like this:
*You plant seeds in the ground, water them, then they grow, and eventually yield crops that can be sold for money/eaten/used in recipes/etc.
*perhaps it could be done through a new skill, farming, or just woodsman, or perhaps not even a skill at all--through items like builders that 'build' plants, like: ready a hoe, mark seeds, then shift+direction to plant a seed
*you could use bottled water like from the spell create food to water the plants by dropping the water onto the same tile as the plant
*maybe you can only plant seeds on special ground, called 'farmland', which is only accesible at farms which maybe you have to buy
*the plants might be permanent, and act like creators that yield 1 unit of the crop every few days or something, but only if the plant is kept alive by watering it daily, or maybe the plant has a set lifespan and yields 1 unit of crop every certain amount of time until it dies.
*if this *was* done through a skill, perhaps your level in the skill would determine how many units of crop the plant yields over its lifetime/how often it yields

More ideas:
Farms could be like guilds...owned and shared by multiple people, and not instanced. There could be one farm outside every major town, just like how there is one outside scorn.
There could be tools of varying quality, like: sturdy hoe of quality, or cracked hoe of poor quality
There could be seeds of varying value or quality, like: tomato seeds (generic not-that-valuable crop), or tobacco seeds (cash crop). Or poor tomato seeds, against tomato seeds of quality (yield small tomatoes vs. huge ones, etc.)
Good quality seeds/tools could be very hard to get, or maybe as parts of quests.
Perhaps there could also be animals on the farm, whether just for looks (they wander around your farm but don't do anything), or maybe they actually serve a use: chickens lay eggs which you can sell, etc.
Basically, it would be a mini version of harvest moon within crossfire...
(please post other ideas about this here)
Note that there is some "resource harvesting" support in trunk. See http://wiki.metalforge.net/doku.php/dev:skills#sk_harvesting for technical details.
