COTVNC runs an order of magnitude slower on OSX 10.2.8
when compared to tightvnc on an old 7500 running LinuxPPC.

Is it the fault of Aqua? Should I try to get a command-line
vnc to run? (The Fink version of vnc requires the X dev
package that Apple has since withdrawn, and the Panther X
dev package won't work properly. So getting a command line
vnc to run won't be trivial.)

The defaults may be cranked up too high. Try messing with the
resolution/color settings. Also check your protocol settings.

Dropped down to 16 bit RGB. Was only allowing Hextile (because
I'm doing a localhost connection through an ssh pipe); forgot to add
Tight encoding. Much closer to the LinuxPPC command line tightvnc
now. Expected my new Mac to be way faster, not slightly
    slower...I'll do more experiments.

haha. Let me make this clear: We are not highly experienced
aqua graphics programmers. We are not doing this as well as we
could. tightvnc has the advantage of having had really really
experienced X programmers on it. It is also MUCH more mature
than Chicken. Chicken "works pretty good", and that's been fine
for us :-) I'd like it to be better, but I have a life and a job and
other things to do; we all do!

I was blaming Aqua on the new Mac more than you guys. It may
be fundamentally more burdened (probably is) than X on
LinuxPPC. Dropping down to 16 bit has made cotvnc useful enough
for me to switch from tight on Linux. I look forward to cotnvc
getting better over time - but it's a valuable, almost essential tool
for me, and I'm _very_ appreciative of the time you're able to
    spend!

I'm going to close this bug since performance isn't a bug as such.
Feel free to re-open it as a feature request (RFE) if you'd like -
performance is always something we'd like to improve, but as Kurt
says, right now, Chicken works and there are more important
    things to fix.
