I need first a disclaimer: all the modules in the codebase are meant as examples for users and are used by core developers to exercise specific portions of the code.=20 =20 Said that, the different between utilization and counter is the following:=20 =20 . counter reports the number of bytes and packet over each measurement interval (the interval is an argument in the config file).=20 this is the simplest module one could write and it is there really for=20 people to familiarize with some callbacks.=20 =20 . utilization reports the number of bytes over a measurement interval (1sec) plus the high watermark over a shorter measurement interval (e.g., 100ms).=20 that means the highest number of bytes sent over each 100ms interval=20 during the 1sec. that code is just meant to exercise the export() callback=20 (no need to do that but it is like that for legacy reasons).=20 =20 none of the modules differentiate between hosts or links. that is done at the filter (in the configuration) where one can limit the=20 count to specific hosts, port numbers, etc.=20 =20 hope this helps. =20 cheers, gianluca =20 =20 =20 =20 ________________________________ From: com...@li... Subject: [como-users] utilization and traffic module =09 =09 Hi =20 I wanted to know what is the difference between the traffic and the utilization module. Both seem to be returning the amount of data passing through the interface in a given time period. Also, am I correct in saying that utilization module counts the number of bits/packets passing through the interface, whether the packet is intended for that host or some other host. =20 Dhruv =20 Dhruv Gupta=20 Graduate Group in Computer Science=20 University of California, Davis=20 =20 "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass.
