Well, this explains a lot. The festival server distributed with the
Festival package is not a Communicator-compliant server, it's the
server side of the internal client-server Festival communication. In
order to use Festival, you need a Communicator-compliant Festival
client wrapper, such as the one that's distributed in CMU's
Communicator system or the one in MITRE's Open Source Toolkit,
available at the same location as the Communicator distribution.

If you can figure it out, please let me know how why you got confused,
and I'll fix the documentation someday :-).
