Sometimes when I try to put my computer into standby mode, I get the the following message:

"The device driver for the 'com0com - serial port emulator' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

It appears to happen only when I run the "PortMon" serial/parallel port monitor from SysInternals (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Portmon.mspx).

    What Windows used?
Did you tried the same while monitoring other ports and com0com is not installed?

On Windows 2000 (com0com is not installed!) the BSOD appears if I try to hibernate while monitoring COM1 (with MS serial driver).

So it looks like a bug in the PortMon.

On Windows XP (com0com is not installed!), I get the the
    following message:

... "Communications Port (COM1)" device is preventing ...

So definitely it's a bug or feature of the PortMon.

I'm running Windows XP. I originally thought this was a com0com problem since I have both a regular serial port and a modem and it only complained about the com0com port not allowing the computer to go into standby. However, if I uninstall com0com, the computer goes into standby mode properly if I do not run PortMon. However, if I run PortMon and then tell the computer to go into standby mode, it complains about the modem not allowing it to go into standby. So, looks like your assessment is correct and I'll look into posting the bug on SysInternals site.

    Thanks for your help!

Followup: Looks like someone has already posted on SysInternals forum (http://forum.sysinternals.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=9877&KW=portmon&PID=43018).

    Thanks again.
