Hi, Has anyone of you tried compiling Apache 2.0.50 on coLinux with Debian? I've been trying for the past couple days and still no success. $>./configure --host=i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld it fails when it tries to configure APR(Apache Portable Runtime). It complains about shared memory and stuff I don't understand. Thanks in advance! _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Run on real Partion works better as large image file. I's also interesting what do you do with colinux. A small image file (500MB) works also very fast. In this case windows cache the file in RAM. For Testing I'm using only small image files. It's easy to handle a backup of this files. I use small file, less than 1MB also to share data beetween varius version of colinus, if I update from one kernel version to other. I have a small booting image and access with this to large partion on real linux for running data, compiler and so on. -- Henry Nestler |

Just want to check... what method gives better performance in coLinux - using an debian/fc2/gentoo system image downloaded from the website or using an existing dual boot system on another partition? ~Samir |

I don't think it really matters which one is said to be "best". It all depends on your own needs, desires and convictions, and that will also probably change over time. I suggest you try them out yourself and go for the one that attracts you the most :) It really doesn't matter that much. I myself choose Debian because of their social contract and their free software guidelines, and I use unstable to be on the bleeding edge. Others choose otherwise for the same or different reasons. I have noticed temporary problems browsing the Windows LAN from Windows and other general use of the Ethernet card while the TAP device is enabled. When it happens to me, the TAP is disconnected, but that might be coicidence, as I've never had it connected very long so far. This doesn't help solve your problem, but to make life easy, I suggest disabling the TAP device in Device Manager when not needed, instead of uninstalling it. |

Hi, it could be true that your connection is slowed down, but not that you can't use colinux's networking feature :-) You can still use M$ Loopback driver and use pcap to connect to this connection. PCap is slower than TAP, but it works. It shouldn't slow down your connection. The question is how would you like to route this connection, if you need that. My connection setup is one Loopback for communication with host and one real NIC for lan/internet. it works perfectly. For local X Win I use TAP, but you probably won't. I am a recent and enthusiastic user of coLinux, as it solves a number of problems of computer usage for me. I read and contribute to the user list and the wiki. I have found the wiki particularly useful when resolving some issues on networking. I also read the developers list to be aware of what is coming, though I do not know what all the techincal issues are. I hope this helps. I've noticed that when the TAP-32 driver that colinux comes with is installed, after a couple days of uptime I start to experience terribly degraded network performance. On www.broadbandreports.com/stest , I get around 220 kbps down/128 kbps up. When I uninstall the TAP driver, I get around 2000 kbps down/ 512 kbps up. I'm on a cable modem with a theoretical maximum of 10 Mbps down/768 kbps up. Anyone else experienced this issue? Unfortunately it makes it impossible for me to use the networking capabilities of colinux. I'm on Windows XP, Professional. I had the problem with SP1, SP1 with the Windows XP Advanced Networking pack installed, and with SP2. Have not tested it in any other configurations. Network card is described as a Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. I experience the problem regardless of if Colinux is running or not, and regardless of if the network is setup using native bridging, or with Internet Connection Sharing. |

Hi, i've been using colinux with vnc, with a kde environment. I decided t= o test enlightenment after reading an article about it, and now i can't f= ind a way to revert to kde and its WM. When i first run enlightenment (straight from kde konsole, to see what ha= ppens) it prompted me if i wanted it to edit some config files to make en= lightenment used by default. I allowed it, but i was never informed what = files it was that it edited. Now i cant seem to revert the change and i w= ould appreciate it if someone more knowledgeable with linux could help me= out. I am posting here because of the special nature of colinux, and how= we don't want the normal X server to start, which might crash the system= if i remember well. I googled around for info and found a file in my home dir, called .xsessi= on, with the following content: # Enlightenment inserted Execution string here exec /usr/bin/enlightenment I tried deleting it, hoping to get an error so i could insert startkde or= something, but it still runs enlightenment. On a lighter note, i've found a very useful tool for use with colinux. It= 's called Explore2fs and you can download it here: http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/ It allows you to open the colinux filesystem image file in windows and br= owse it and edit files. Very useful if you get yourself a unbootable syst= em or just want to mess around with it in windows. I don't think it's adv= isable to use this tool on a running colinux filesystem. Thanks in advance for the help, Hugo |

Okay, I figured this out and I'll post it here so if others see this happen. The problem is due to the combination of Windows XP SP2 with DEP enabled on an Athlon64 processor. After trying combination after combination and seeing a ton of blue screens, I was able to get coLinux to operate by changing the /NoExecute to be AlwaysOff in my boot.ini. I consider this a little bit of a bug with coLinux, and it's bitten the DivX encoder too on this processor. =20 DEP =3D Data Execution Prevention, which basically enables the flagging = of memory as being non-executable, thereby preventing injected code from being run if pushed in via a buffer overrun. Lots of details are here at Microsoft's site: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2mempr. mspx Something in coLinux isn't playing nice with this, and I end up with a STOP error everytime I start up the app. I tried flagging just the colinux-daemon.exe to be bypassed with this stuff, but it still BSOD'd, probably because of something in the linux.sys because it was not flagged to run without DEP. I had to disable it for the entire OS. This isn't really desirable from a security perspective long term, but short term it really doesn't make my machine less secure than when I was running service pack 1, because SP1 didn't enable this capability in the first place. FWIW, on my work machine, a Pentium4 desktop, this doesn't crash. DEP is enforced by the OS, not relying on the underlying hardware to do it, since DEP isn't available on this processor, and according to the above link: By default, software-enforced DEP only protects limited system binaries, regardless of the hardware-enforced DEP capabilities of the processor. I'm curious if the OS considers linux.sys to be part of the OS or not?=20 I believe the new E64MT Pentium 4 procs have this enabled, so this problem may or may not appear on that platform. With more people moving towards the Athlon64 processors (they are getting cheaper now), this problem might affect more coLinux people in the near future. Thanks, hope this helps others! My apologies. The problem was that the Internet Connection sharing was not set up correctly as a result of the change of Local Area Connection. I hope this helps someone else. John ------- Forwarded message follows ------- From: John Fletcher <J.P...@as...> To: col...@li... Subject: Upgrade to 0.6.2 pre 1 - network problem Date sent: Wed, 15 Sep 2004 13:33:14 +0100 Upgrading to 0.6.2. pre 1 on Windows 2000 with Fedora 1 image. I have uninstalled 0.6.1 and installed snapshot 20040910 in its place. I first made sure I had removed both the service and the driver of the old version. The install went fine and the new colinux worked first time with the same configure file to my Fedora 1 image. First problem. VNC could not locate it. This is because the new installation had created a new Local Area Connection 3 alongside the old one which had not been removed in the uninstall process. I set up the new connection with correct IP number and VNC now works. Second problem. I cannot connect from colinux to the outside world e.g. yum list updates hangs. This is because it cannot see the outside world (ping fails). It could before. Also, I cannot delete the old Local Area Connection 2. What has changed? I would suggest you to simply change to the last snapshot. It fixes several bugs in 0.6.1 (some more serious than others). You can use the same image with no problems (except the normal ones of changing from a 2.4 to 2.6 kernel). The biggest change you'll encounter would be that now the colinux-daemon.exe needs to have the config file as argument (with "-c config.xml") and the network adapter is found with a different logic, but nothing to worry about. You may also found that the initrd.gz doesn't work for you (it's a know bug that should be fixed soon), so you will need to compile your modules or get them here: http://xpto.ath.cx/colinux/snapshots/modules-2.6.8.1-co-0.6.2-pre1.tar.gz Regards, ~Nuno Lucas |

If you are still interested, I have put the initrd.gz file there now: * http://xpto.ath.cx/colinux/snapshots/initrd.gz Sorry about that. Regards, ~Nuno Lucas |

So the question then becomes is it a file missing or access > control? Is there any indication of which file it is looking at? There are only 3 files involved: the xml config file, initrd.gz (if configured to use it) and the the kernel image (vmlinux or other). The cobd images are loaded later, after the kernel starts booting, so there should be a lot of other informative messages (line network driver init, etc.) Another possible cause for the error could be you using an editor that opens the config file in exclusive mode. That is just speculation, off course. What I find strange is that it shows only those messages. It should display more output about what it was doing in the meantime. Regards, ~Nuno Lucas |
