#35 Data loss on sync

My Cocoal.icio.us unable to sync for quite a while until I did the Keychain URL hack. Upon reconnecting to del.icio.us, it promptly deleted all of the bookmarks I had created while offline and simply synced to the del.icio.us version, which I had also been using to create links. Luckily, I had a backup. But I can't figure out a way to get the bookmarks created after the last sync to get into del.icio.us. And since there is no import/export functionality, they seem to be locked in limbo within my backup data plist. Needless to say, this is annoying.

Okay, there may be some hope with the last_refresh_time file. At least, if I set it to the current time and use my backup posts files, it promptly erases all of the posts I put into del.icio.us since the last sync (last July). I hope that when I use the backup of my new posts (I'm beginning to not trust Cocoal.icio.us with my data), all of the dates will be preserved. It looks like they will. It looks like I could merge the old and new post files and get them all into my del.icio.us account. But Cocoal.icio.us has to play well with data entered through other means.

Okay, so I merged the old and new ones (thank you, FileMerge!) and then manually copied over the ones that wouldn't merge properly. I had to use the last_refresh_time file from the old data (7/26/06), otherwise they would get wiped out. Now they missing links show up in Cocoal.icio.us, but not on del.icio.us. So that is a little bit better.

Well, if I open all of the missing bookmarks in Cocoal.icio.us (the ones that I created in Cocoal.icio.us between the last sync and my most recent sync and that were deleted in favor of ones I had entered through the website) and press Post, they'll appear again on del.icio.us. So yay! I'm left wondering if this will happen every time I input a link on the website and in Cocoal.icio.us in-between syncs. For example, suppose my laptop is offline and I want to clear out browser windows, so I start bookmarking them in Cocoal.icio.us and then quit it. Then, when I go online again, I put in some links using the website. The next time I open Cocoal.icio.us, am I going to lose all of the links in-between the current time and the last refresh time?
